Hi Pat I know how you feel about placing your husband in a nursing home.

I have been told by my husband's family to send my husband to one.
It is not going to be easy for you to care for him at home,but if you have some supports such as family or home care.
I mentioned in my case living in Canada,there are some resources available to help,such as home help and respite.
I have been caring for my husband for 20 years now. He has a head injury that caused many disabilities.
I had to learn to set boundaries and say "no"sometimes.
So sorry that this has happened to you both.

You will need as much help as you can get so you don't burn out. Make sure you get time for yourself often even if it's not a lot of time. I can't give any specific advice because my husband never needed as much care as your husband needs now. There may be books or Google taking care of quadriplegic person. To see what's out there.

I took care of my husband but he was able to go to the bathroom by himself,, he was a big man and I couldn't lift him, I don't think I could do what you are doing..get as much help as you can because feeding, changing him and keeping him clean will take so much out of you. I am very sorry you both have to go thru this, it is so hard..please try and get some time for yourself like Tired said.

I admire you for taking on the challenge of caring for your husband at home. I understand the feelings. I may have to do the same somewhere down the line for my husband. Remember to get the medical help and support you need, so that you can be kind to yourself as well. Keep us posted when you can.

Not sure when he's coming home but I've asked the Discharge Planning person at the Rehab Center to put me in touch with free agencies that help. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Found out he's being released next Thursday April 6. I've hired an ambulance service and rented a hospital bed and oxygen machine. Wish me luck ! I'm looking forward to having home again :-)

I have been in home health for 29 years I pray that your discharge planners from rehab have set you up with home health and assisted you with different training for taking care of your husband at home. As a full-time caregiver the support team you have around you is imperative to maintaining your health.

Hi Phoebes, it's me, kiddo gal. been a long time since I have been on here at DS, since they changed the site a few years back. I miss being able to vent and laugh and cry with my DS friends, going to try and get back on the site and try to get used to it. Some days I think I am losing it rather quickly! just saying hi and letting you know that you are one brave woman to take on the task you have. ((hugs))
