Medicare Question

My father and I have spent the last few months going thru the hassel to get my mother on disability. They rushed her application and we got the results last week. They found her disabled as of Feb 2005. They are allowed to pay her a year retro and they did. We are wondering about medicare. I know when we applied for her disability they said you have to be receiving disability payments for 2 years before you can get on medicare..why I don't know. Anyways, does anyone know if this retro payment for one year counts as one of the two years. How about the time going back to when they find her disabled..feb 2005? My father is going to try and call tomorrow but he is not so good at this stuff and thought I would ask if anyone knows or has had this experience.

they are suppose to make back payments from the first day application was filed. as for medicare, there is a two yr wait.

my husband is also on disability and from what I understand the 24 month waiting period begins at the time of the awarding of disability not from the 1st payment. For example, my husband was awarded disability in January of 2007 but started receiving checks in June of 2007 but he will be eligible for Medicare in January of 2009.

Thanks for the info. We recently got an answer on this. They found her disabled since feb 2005 and gave her a retro check in june going back to june of 07. They are only allowed to do one year of retro...its the same as medicare..so even though they found her disabled since feb 2005, they only count from June 2007..so we have another year to go.
