In October 2014, after two years of back and no help from her doctor except injections and pain killers, I took my mother to see another doctor. Halloween she was using a cane for support. Thanksgivings and Christmas she was using a walker. New Years she was in a wheel chair. February 15, 2015, the day after Valentine's Day, she had first one then a second back surgery. Three weeks of rehab in the hospital, no results. After six months in rehab at a nursing home, she signed herself out and came home to her house. Nothing was prepared. I wasn't prepared. Fast forward to September 2017; we have moved into a bigger house together and we have a couple of sitters that come while I'm at work 5 days a week. There have been multiple sessions of physical and occupational, still no results. My mother seems to have become extremely comfortable with being cared for and would even like to revert back to the bedpan rather than use chair. While she seems comfortable with our plight, I am tired, sad, angry and resentful. I feel like she took away my freedom of choice by just signing herself out of the nursing home. Others seem to think, as does my mother, that this is the way things should be. At 54, I had just started a new position in my department when my mother had her surgery. My new supervisor told me it would get worse before it got better. He was right. I can't see sny light at the end of this tunnel.
