My husband could not get off the toilet seat the first time he sat on it after being in the hospital for two weeks. I had to find a neighbor who was strong enough to help him get up. He continued to build up his strength, and was able to go to the bathroom without needing assistance. One thing I did was buy those toilet seat add-ons which you put on top of the existing seat. It heightens the seat and then he does not have to sit so low. Makes it easier for him to get up. I got mine at our local pharmacy, CVS. Rite Aid or a medical supply store will have them too.

Was your husband a veteran of any of the wars? He can qualify for Aide and Attendance benefits which will help pay for his care. I think he may also be able to get some help if he was not in a war, but I know for sure he can get some financial assistance if he was in the service during war time. Contact the Veterans Administration. Google: Aid and Attendance benefits for Veterans.

Hopefully, he will continue to build strength and all will be OK.

You are not making too much out of this - all of us caregivers face challenges we are not sure how to deal with and sometimes it can be overwhelming!!!

I am surprised they are not offering you any home health care...can you request it? Sometimes the squeaky wheel does get some grease!

The rehab should have a social worker that can advise you. Or his doctor's office may be of minimal use...

I remember when I first brought my husband home from 2 months in rehab. He had suffered brain trauma and was partially paralyzed from a stroke. I WAS SO SCARED! The first couple weeks of taking care of him I was so nervous. But after awhile I learned the ropes. I had enlisted a social worker, health care worker, a physical therapist, along with an occupational therapist. I learned that there are organizations out there to help you with what ever you need. I also learned that I was stronger than I thought I was. I suggest that you call your local VNA or Adult and Aging Agency. Many medical supplies are free or donated.
Stay strong. Ask questions about financial aide.

Hello HugsNeeded2, It is perfectly normal to feel scared ! When I brought my husband home I used a baby monitor to keep an eye on him at night. We lived in a two story house and there was no way he could go up the stairs. I put a twin bed in our living room for him. The first few weeks were very tense, but then both he & I found out what worked best for us. Before we knew it he was adjusting to being home and we settled into our "new normal". Eventually with the help of a home physical therapist and extra stair rails he was able to climb our stairs and sleep in his own bed.

Let yourself take each day "as it comes". Some will be good and others will be harder. But from my experience, it does get better.
