I never got around to pumping and freezing but my son is now 6 months so I'm about to start solids and water in a beaker. I just tasted the water from his brand new beaker and it tastes like marzipan (filtered boiled then cooled water). I washed the beaker with detergent after taking it out of the packaging.
I suspect it's the plastic it's made from but am not sure what to do. He won't know any better I suppose...
I definitely believe that coke tastes different from a glass bottle, can or plastic bottle so maybe it's just the same thing as that and I shouldn't worry about it....

My two refused to drink frozen milk. It turns out that I carry extra proteins or enzymes or peptides (I can't recall exactly, it's been a while) in my milk which breaks down the milk quicker and so it didn't stay good frozen. It happens in a certain percentage of women, I think mel had it happen to her too, I can't remember. I'm not saying that's what it is with you, it may be the freezer bags, if they've thawed and refrozen like if they're in the door of the freezer, that way it's not a constant temp from the opening and closing of the door, etc. I threw away 300oz frozen milk and then was told that even though it smells a little funny, it's still good. I would just suggest that if you're going to do a girls night here and there pump before you go out and just tuck the bottle in the fridge for hubby to warm later, that way it's still really fresh. Sorry a little rambly!

Lipase, suzy. Too much lipase can make your milk smell or taste "off" if you store it for any length of time. However, it is just as good...provided that you baby will eat it. If it is a problem, there is a technique yo can use on the ebm, immediately after pumping, and before freezing, which is to scald it:

To scald milk:

* Heat milk to about 180 F (82 C), or until you see little bubbles around the edge of the pan (not to a full, rolling boil).
* Quickly cool and store the milk.

Scalding the milk will destroy some of the antiinfective properties of the milk and may lower some nutrient levels, but this is not likely to be an issue unless all of the milk that baby is receiving has been heat-treated.

Per Lawrence & Lawrence, bile salt-stimulated lipase can also be destroyed by heating the milk at 144.5 F (62.5 C) for one minute (p. 205), or at 163 F (72 C) for up to 15 seconds (p. 771).

Lipase! That's it! Dang Franny, if only you were around way back then! I had no idea you cold scald the milk! (And I now consider myself pretty well educated on nursing!) If I had been able to pick your brain about a year earlier, it would have been great!

Yep, I had the same problem as Suzy. As Franny mentioned, as long as your baby will take it, the milk is still perfectly fine.

See if it happens with the next one. Mine tasted metallic, and definitely didn't taste good to me :) Thankfully, my son was fine drinking it!

my milk seems extremely greasy. i dont know why, but baby does not like frozen milk very much he is very much partial to the real thing I just think he doesnt like milk out a of a bottle. But in all my frozen bags they go straight to the freezer after pumping. And the fat and milk separate...very unique to see I just pumped and bottle fed my daughter so I never got to see it. Anyway I have playtex bottles and use gerber bags and it seem fine to me...maybe the hard bottles have additives in them...check it out good luck

my milk was so rich with my DD it looked like something between 2% and whole cows milk. quite a bit of hind milk. and baby grew really well (and was super skinny) while she was on my milk so I wasn't concerned at all.

i really wonder what it will be like for DD #2
