surgery next week, should I expect...

Hey anyone,

Does anyone have an idea of how often a surgeon finds more problems after a lumpectomy? I am starting to fear the wait between the surgery and possibly being told it was more extensive than they thought! I am just not looking forward to waiting for the surgeon to tell me, after they've checked my nodes and this other little mass( less than a cm) may be invasive. Right now they say I have grade 3 DCIS. Looking forward to putting this behind me, but I can't stand waiting for 'news'. I guess in a way I'll have to get used to it! I'm sure we all experience those waiting periods once theirs a diagnosis! Every 3 or 6 months, every year...
Sorry to be so gloomy! I'm just anxious right now.
Does anyone have a good coping strategy for those nervous times?

Sweetie, DCIS is NOT invasive ~ didn't he tell you that? It usually stays right where it is. It doesn't get into the lymph nodes & stuff like that. They DO check the tissue around the area where the little spots are just to be safe. I had exactly the same thing ~ I had 3 little spots, and my doc said DCIS is NON-invasive, so the nodes are not involved. She did have to take quite alot of tissue from me, but I don't care. By doing that it looks like I got a breast lift on one side! lol. I look a little lopsided, but at my age who gives a darn.

Don't worry about it sweetie. It's a cinch. Naturally mine was malignant since that's what DCIS is, so I had to have 6 wks of radiatiion. They don't do chemo with it as a rule tho, unless there's extenuating circumstances. So don't worry ~ you won't lose your hair. Radiation does NOT make you lose your hair.

Don't worry ~ this surgery is a really easy one. i've had 3 spinal surgeries, and this is MUCH easier than those. I didn't mind this one bit. Take care and try to ease your mind a little,, ok? Hugs, Lee

I am waiting too. Mine is not until Oct. I have two weddings to go to and they said it would be ok because dcis is a slow mover. Only 10% go on to be more. I am having the whole breast off though. I do not have to have any other treatments. Good luck and God bless.

Jrmr1306 ~ Is yours DCIS too? I was told the incidence of it going further wasn't that high. Hmmm. Guess i'll have to do some research. LOL.
