Hello-
New to this group...joining cuz Mom has survived and has been clear for 6 years now...3 out of the 4 sisters in her family so far have had breast cancer, two died.
Mom went for her mammogram this week-the hospital installed one of the new digital machines and during the test the tech states: "oh my gosh, you have 12 clips left inside your breast!"
Anyway, is this normal? I would suspect cauterization would be the way to go if you have a bleeder during any surgery...I worked as an ophthalmic tech for years and we did not deal with much blood but did use cauterization.
Please advise. And ALL of you are in my heart and prayers.

Its to help when they do radiation on that breast. So no worries. Just to make sure...go in to the oncologist with your mom next time and ask if that is the reason the clips are there. They should be happy to explain and ease any concerns.

The thing is with Mom- she lives in the North and I am in the South and 6 years ago my son was still home and she did not want me to come home to be with her! It is hard as I am still here and she there...and now she is 72...maybe it is time...
If you are able to go north and be with her until you get your questions answered by her oncxologist, you will buy yourself some much-needed peace of mind.
BTW, 72 iasn't all that old. My 80-year-old mother would consider that 'the good ole days'.
Lay your worries to rrest, talk to your mother, and find out all the info available, including whether she wants and will allow your help.

And you are right 72 isnt old and she is enjoying her life! Her and Daddy! She called me first (outta all 5 kids) to ask about the clips as it clearly worried her...I feel privileged! Her breast is tender and thought there was a connection.
I have a story I have to share with all of you:
I have had 4 back surgeries and for each she would come to Atlanta to tend to me during the re-coop process...
the 3rd surgery was because I tripped backwards over a box at work--I was in instant pain after years of doing great!
I called her the night it happened, which happened to be the day she found out she had the cancer---you know what she said?
"I am getting on a plane tomorrow to come help you!"
She had put aside her own hell to help her baby! Such strength...compassion... and love...
She is a hard act to follow! I thank my God that he gave me to her and Dad every day...

Your mom is a remarkable woman and she obviously raised a remarkable woman. I have parents like that as well. My mom has a bad back and early Alzheimer's and takes care of my Dad who is an amputee and not altogether well. Regardless, they took care of my after my stroke and after I fractured my back in 3 places post-seizure. They plan to take care of me after my surgery next month even though they could use help being cared for. They both insist I need to come stay with them so they can look after me. We'll see how that goes. I will go if I can help them but I need to make sure I recover myself.
I feel lucky evey day I have them and have an entirely different view of what counts as 'old' than many of my friends. They have an emotional fortitude and strength that that WWII generation seemed to soak up. I envy that and strive to have even half the strength and integrity in my own life. Sometimes I feel like I come close. Others....well......not so much. ;-)
