I just read an excerpt from a plot summary about a book I am going to read. It said:

As the narrator's mental state deteriorated, his mind formed a new personality that was able to escape from the problems of his reality.

Perhaps this is the key to getting over life's problems?

What do you think?

Nope, it's the key to avoiding life's problems...unless you're a young child, then it's a coping mechanism.

My exhusbands buddy's sister had a psychotic break. She was 16 at the time. She was convinced she was that beautiful actress from Dallas, the one who did Playboy, what was her name? she sells skin products now or something....wait...Victoria Principal.

Anyway, she stayed awhile on the Psych Ward, was released, and went straight home to kill herself.

Incredibly tragic.

If we can tolerate reality, no matter how intolerable it feels, its a better, less entertaining way.

In a way, we do do that. I'm sure you have a different persona at work than at home. You have a persona here that is about taco's and pizza; that is a personality you created. Most of us have a different "face" for the general public than with our closest friends. It's just a matter of degree that makes it a psychotic break.
