Its coming toward the end of a relationship I wanted to last forever. Not my choice. Nothing is "wrong" with the relationship... I think we.are amazing. We've been together about two and a half years. We have spent almost every day and night together since we met, cannot wait to see each other, share so many laughs and friends and adventures together. Even home on the couch feels like a vacation. Our sexual compatibility is what I always hoped for. He thinks I'm beautiful, and I think he's.so handsome. I can't get enough of snuggling with him. He has two kids, five and six, who love me as much as I love them. I take pride and giving them a family life when they are with us, and feel its important to be able to demonstrate a loving relationship for them.
His problem is my past. About a month into dating, the question of married people came up. I'm not proud, and I know I won't gain much sympathy on this forum for this, but I did fall for a married man at one point in my life, and was honest with my new guy about it. He admitted a one night stand with a married woman, and said he couldn't judge. I was nervous and thrilled that the thing I was most ashamed of was out, and seemingly not an issue moving forward. We went on for almost a year of bliss, falling in love and seeing a long future ahead.
After about a year, my guy and I had a drunken conversation where he asked if I was sure he was the only one and if I had been seeing anyone else when we met. I hadn't been seeing anyone, and had put to bed an old relationship that kept popping up, right before I met him. That would be the married guy. He is a family member of a close friend of mine. We started long distance emails about almost 10 years ago. There was a lot of friendship and mutual support (I wasn't in a relationship, his was distant, they even lived in separate houses for a time). I began to think it was true love. And we did take it to they physical level a handful of times over about a year and a half. The last time being on a family trip with a bunch of us, including his wife. That horrified us both to the point where we distanced ourselves. I met someone else and asked him not to contact me. He admitted everything to his wife, and they worked on things. I was honest with my friend, and she forgave me, saying that she knew their relationship was a mess and that neither me nor he were the type to normally do something like that. But over the years, we occasionally reached out to each other... I even asked him about relationship advice. We hadn't spoken in a couple years, when he reached out to me about three years ago. He said he wanted to see me and talk about being together. He and his wife were still married, and living in different countries. I had wondered if we were compatible, and I agreed to see him. In seeing him, I realized he wasn't who I thought he was, and lost a lot of respect for him (I know, finally). We had a few more conversations, then I told him to not contact me again. I felt finally free of the wondering and had a lot more confidence and hope.
Then I met my guy. I couldn't believe how the universe really does work in that way. When you finally open yourself up tp real love, the university delivers. I felt so lucky, and continued to every single day. The blessing was not lost on me. What I was so proud to tell him that night was that I had indeed been ready for him, and was all his. I had been to therapy, I did the work, I cleaned out the cobwebs and I was totally and completely HIS. I really can't express how proud and whole I felt and eager to give my guy everything in me. But, he didn't see it that way. He saw it as a threat, and that this man was lurking, and I may not be honest about it. We.struggled from there on. Six months later, the married guy texted me about a terrorist event. I was horrified. I told him that I was honest with my guy about him, and it was a huge thorn for us, and to never contact me again! Then my guy broke up with me. He couldn't take it. He loved me, but couldn't handle my behavior in the past, or that this guy was lurking. Again,I'm not proud, and a lot contributed to my participation in the affair. But I am a good and kind person, and am even more determined to live with a clear conscience. And I thought my guy could see all he meant to me, and how safe his heart was.
About four months later, after lots of tears and worrisome depression on my part, we reconciled. I was beside myself, determined to make it work. My guy said he'd be miserable without me, and his kids needed me. A few months of joy... Then, he started asking about that family vacation I am not at all proud of. And that's been the nail in the coffin. He refused to tell me how he knew and what prompted him to ask (I never went into that kind of detail), and wrestles with being disgusted that I could do that, and loving me.
I'm frustrated he pushed for so much from the past. I believe the past has no place between partners. I care about how he treats me and that's all that matters. I'm not saying that out of convenience for my situation. I don't want to picture him with other women (though it is inevitable, as we are near his hometown and many exes). And I'm angry and hurt I gave him very painful honesty, and he used it to destroy us. I was humble, ashamed and trusting that he loved me. I have taken very good care of him, been honest, have nothing past or present to hide. I can see how much he loves me. Having been with plenty of men who don't care, I do truly know my guy loves me more than he has anyone. It bottles my mind that none of that is enough. He gets advice from friends who don't know me, and refuses to try counseling. My friends and family don't like how hurt I was when we last broke up, but know all the gory details and respect how I feel about wanting to be with him. I'm also feeling very responsible to the kids.... We are a family. I love them so much. They can't wait to see me and jump in my lap. We give them structure, respect and love in my home. I don't want them to see their dad not make something work with now two women that they love (their mom, and me)
I'll add that I'm 43. I have been engaged and in several long term relationships. Nothing has compared to the relationship I have had with my guy. I know what I've found before him, and I didn't think someone that fit me so well existed. I thought I'd have to settle, and I didn't at all with him. In fact, there were bonuses. And I know it wasn't one way, he felt the same. We went on 12 hour car rides that felt like an hour, we danced in the kitchen at 2am, he spent hours playing every instrument to record one special song for me. I felt so blessed. I don't know that I'll ever find that kind of home for my heart again, nor will I understand why it couldn't be enough. It really was beautiful.

So basically your are saying he's breaking up w/you over your past and this is the 2nd time. I am afraid to say this but I don't see a future for you if he feels this strongly about the matter. Trust has to be a part of a relationship for it to work and he's basically saying he doesn't trust you. Or he may just be saying that your past actions are too shameful. Either way - it sounds like u may have to b very strong about this issue and try your best to cope. A forced breakup is rough. I've been there. So sorry.
Wish he was willing to work out the situation you sound lk you genuinely made a mistake and you are a better person for it now, been there myself.
As hard as it is to find a relationship these days it's beyond me how easy ppl walk away from a good one.
So sorry - hang in there and good luck.
I finally realized it was more about her fears than my past. Accepting I could never understand those fears. Understanding the outcome would be the same whether I did or didn't understand.
That's when I again found my peace. When I was able to have compassion for her and warm place in my heart for what we had.
What you have right now is a guy you're living with who doesn't trust you at all and you are now in a relationship you know that he is ending. GET OUT NOW. Don't wait for him to end it and stay in this stewing mess, because the kids aren't dumb and probably have already started figuring out that Dad is acting strange and something's going on because they have overheard (and kids do hear things). Plus you're providing him with sex on demand until he has had enough sex to finally throw you out.
Leave without warning and let him find out what it is like for you to be gone. Someone who holds a grudge like this, particularly when this is in the past is childish and immature and has a major problem that needs therapy. Don't reconcile until he finishes therapy otherwise you will go through the same lack of trust and being treated poorly over and over again. You don't accept being treated like that because that's just not right.
Luckily, ATGB, it's my house.
I am having a hard time grasping why he would stick in there, trying as long as he did, yet not take a shot at counseling. And as you say, MJ, that it is hard to find someone so special, and to walk away when no harm was done to you in the relationship at all, is hard. It is sad that I am a good person, and really do have old fashioned values, despite getting sucked into something that demonstrated otherwise. And I thought I found a sweet understanding guy who held no judgement, AND who I could finally give all of my love and commitment to. By the time I found out he wasn't so understanding, and didn't see the real me, I was in deep, with him and the kids. I was even excited for them to become jerky teenagers. :) It just all felt like where I belonged. I haven't felt that sure of anything before.
I am now really worried about what to say to the kids, to let them know how much I love them, to give them a basic reason as to why it's ending, and to minimize scars. They LOVED seeing their dad and I together. His son would see cute things, like cats hugging, and say that it was like his dad and I. They are very loving kids, and really responded to being in that environment. I'm really worried about them. And sad to lose them too.
I think he was fine you did a married man ,but when the man was stil a presence, he couldn't run the risk of thinking you were playing him.
As for the kids, that part will probably be hard for you, I'm sure. Unfortunately that is one of the battle wounds left after breaking up with a man who has kids...getting close to them and then no longer being around them.
I hope you are able to find peace. Big hugs!!
Tell him get out now because he has no trust in you and you refuse to be involved with someone who treats you with no dignity and respect. And get your key from him when you tell him to get out.
Question I have to ask is....Will he ever let it go? Is he someone who is not easy to forget? If that is the case, it may eat at him for years to come and actually build a wedge between you too. Hopefully, it will just take some time to heal.
Good luck to you. I can feel your pain.
I've known the thoughts haunt him and gross him out, but that's the most descriptive he's been with exactly what runs through his head.
Then he said: "If it wasn't for that, you're perfect"
I don't know if that makes me feel better or worse. It validates what I KNOW we have, how very special we are. And it further frustrates me that he won't at least try counseling to get control of those thoughts. It is going to be torture for both of us to move on. Why not do hard work in therapy to try to come out on the other side together? I really can't come to grips with it...
I think you avoided a potential failed marriage. While some have said to not bring up the past again, I think that hiding anything could be potentially harmful. The problem isn't what you did in the past, it's that HE couldn't deal with it. That was something valuable to find out, before you potentially married him, in my opinion.
I am sure that my words ring hollow right now, but take time to heal. He has made it clear that he can't live with what you did a long time ago. That's HIS hangup, not yours. You did (IMO) the right thing by sharing it with him. While he may be of the opinion that since you did it once, you might do it again, there should be a "statute of limitations" on some things, if you aren't that person anymore.
As long as you know you are not that person anymore, I don't think it should be anything to hide or be ashamed of. You have moved past that point. Something a lot of people can't do.
As far as his kids. Sometimes you have to move on. I loved my ex's family. They love me more than my OWN family did. My brother in law and I did a lot of things together, but I had to move on. I couldn't be a part of that family with ex's actions hanging over me. I felt it wouldn't be fair to them or me to try to maintain relations, with her in the picture. After all, they are her family, not mine. I know it sounds cold, but is reality and something you need to think about and deal with.
Relationships are like a ring. It either fits, or it doesn't. He said it plainly. If it wasn't for that, you'd be perfect. It's his hangup, not yours. Don't torture yourself over it. The right person, will not hold your past sins against you, but embrace them as a part of you.
Good luck to you.
Another thing - the married man reached out to you via text and you tell your new bf about this? - WHY? - again, not judging you but what where you thinking?
I hate to say this but you almost set yourself up here. He's not tripping b/c you had other loves - he's tripping b/c you slept w/the man while the wife was in the same building - again, I am not sure why you felt that was information you should have shared or you felt that was easy for anyone to process. I think you learned your lesson and moving forward you are going to share just enough information. Being honest doesn't mean we have to tell everything. There are things we all keep to ourselves, nothing wrong w/that.
So sorry - it doesn't sound to me like you are dealing w/a person who's willing to overlook this and unfortunately he has the right to turn down the counseling as well. Ya'll aren't married - if he knows this is a deal breaker for him - he's doing the right thing by walking away now. I know this isn't what you want to hear but I am being upfront.
Good luck.
I have always been a kind and sensitive person, but I am different in that I realized the parts of me that let me be susceptible to doing something that wasn't right. Despite loving family and friends, I have felt a loneliness most of my life. There are tons of contributing factors to that, but the result was, I thought the attention I was getting was meaningful. I also justified that his wife did not want him. While I really didn't know her, I know her sister well, and that was the family's consensus. So it seemed to be a no harm situation. That wasn't the case, however. And I feel gross myself about it. Ridding myself of the situation, and the factors that fed it, was the best feeling I've had in my life.
Being rewarded with a wonderful guy was the second best feeling. We fit each other perfectly. Knowing how we do fit, I really can't imagine someone else is out there. I've had other bfs that that didn't fit, and ending the relationship usually left me with hope that I'd find the one that did. I thought this was it. It really is so rare to have that mutual attraction, patience and joy with each other. I really don't have hope of finding it again.
If I was dating a man for a couple years and he used some BS I did almost ten years ago as the reason to end it, then good bye, good luck, don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.
Give me a break. People have entire lives before relationships, so I call BS on this text he sent. He is coming up with a reason to end the relationship, and so he conveniently pulls out something from ten years ago that he had NOTHING to do with?
Uh uh. If it bothered him so much...that he "dramatically puts your face on all these people" and "he is mortified" then...he should have stated that when you told him. Back THEN, it would've been a legitimate dealbreaker for him.
Instead, he dates you...introduces his hids to you...etc....and now this?
He's a douche.
I just don't buy it. No offense, I wouldn't date a man who slept with a married woman either, but I know that about me....the last thing I would do is say Ok, introduce my son to him, etc.
I believe the past is the past...but he should've made his decision waaaaay back when.
Also, did him and his kids lived w/you - WHY? - makes me wonder now if he used you some how - I don't know, something seems off.
