I for one love my children, so why am I a part-time dad, and not an equal time dad
If you're asking if it's easier on the children, I'll have to say in my situation, it wasn't. In the beginning I had almost sole custody of the kids. My stbx would visit them for an hour a day, and have them for a few hours over the weekend, but other than that, they were with me. It was tough on them. Despite what I think of their father (and trust me, it's NOT good), they adore him. He's their dad. End of story.
Once we got a joint custody agreement in place, the kids were much happier. They got to spend equal time with both of their parents. Yes, there was a massive adjustment period and, in my case, there are other issues in play (mostly that my stbx moved in immediately with OW and they both insisted that my children accept a new blended family). Despite these issues, my children have slowly adjusted and are finally getting used to the new routine of back and forth between households. They still don't like the blended family idea, but I think in time they will adjust to that as well.
Now, for me: being away from my children is hard, however, I'm learning to make the most of my time alone. I have made new friends and visiting with them (and even dating) is much easier when you don't have to find babysitting. That probably sounds cold-hearted, but like I said, I'm making the best of a painful situation.
Bottom line, I feel that children need both parents, whether the parents are together or not.
