The Doldrums was an area on the earth where there are frequent times of light to no winds. They are found near the Equator.
Boats in this area are frequently becalmed and they can't make any progress. They just drift aimlessly with no ability to steer or do anything.
This area is also refered to as the Horse Lattitudes because during times when a boat was becalmed for a while they would throw the horses overboard to lighten the load of the boat.
To get out of the Doldrums sailors would have to wait for extended periods of times (that is why all of the trade routes avoided this area). SOmetimes sailors were really lucky and they would get a storm and be able to make some progress to get out of the Doldrums and into the trades.
I feel like that is going on in my life now. I am stuck waiting to see what my wife's next move is. It is so fustrating because I am sitting here becalmed, I have no ability to steer, just drift.
