I was visiting my 89 year old mother and for the first time in my life she said that she "loves me and misses me when I am not around...."
Growing up we knew we were loved but it was never said...is was in her actions......and I turned out OK....
I did learn to show the affection...after seeing some of my friends families...thinking 'oh how good a hug must feel',,,,but this was one of the best Mothers Day s yet.......

That was a long time in coming, but well worth it I would imagine.

Through acquiring different tools for my tool bag, I knew I was not going to get this stuff, unless I went out and got it myself.
It was almost as if I had to train him how to show affection for me.
Now my father will hug and kiss me on the cheek as if it was commonplace.
But he never shyed away, or was caught off guard.
So it was in him, I just had to have the balls to go get it. Even if it would not have been well received, I would have kept doing it, as it's about my expression to him, not his to mine.
You know, all that "Did I teach him to be a manly man" shit, little did he know, that's precisely what manly men do. He's learning though. He's a good student. LOL!
I'm glad you got to hear that from your mom, it must have felt wonderful. :)
You can never give kids of any age too much love.

PS. I am closer to my mother too as a result of the separation and divorce. Good work Pemdcat ... this is the stuff that counts on judgement day. My mother tells me that nothing is more important to her these days than getting hug from me.
