After reading these posts, I can't think of any. Sure, people start out giddily in love and with the best of intentions for a lifetime of happiness...

I'm of the opinion, just live together and try to make a relationship work. If the relationship doesn't work out, there's no paperwork, no dividing of assets and possessions (each leaves with what they came in with), child custody can (hopefully) be worked out between the two parties with no need to bring the court into it.

Koolman, it sounds like your mom and dad didn't have that much in common since when he retired all they did was spend time together and yell at each other. I think that is the biggest problem is that most people get the "Dating giggles" think they love each other, do some stuff together and then have sex, sex and more sex and then find out all they really have in common is sex. Then after they are married for may years and the sex gets old because they use it as a "Tool" then the marriage is over.

I myself believe in love, that is why I am here because I LOVED the person that I was with and then "THEY" decided to take off because they lied about the relationship in the first place and all they wanted was SEX, COMFORT and MONEY.

I agree somewhat that people are a continous cycle of change. While we would like to say no one is who they were 5 years ago, or who they will be in 5 years, I believe there are some people that do not change. There are people that are still the same as they were in high school or their college days. They are ok with that and will possibly live like that their whole life cus they are comfortable being that person.

But then there are people that do continue to change. Their hopes and wishes are that the people they choose to start a relationship with are also those that want to continue to grow, learn and embrace the changes each face; and do it all together.

It's a personal preference. You would choose to live your life as you stated koolman. Living separately and just getting together for fun and sex. No strings attached, you walk away clean if you want to. I am one who prefers to share all aspects of my life with someone. I want to find someone who will grow, learn and change with me. I am willing to do the work. But thats just me.

I have to agree there are more reasons not to get married than to get married these days, especially if you are older.

I think it depends on how good a match you are and how honest the other person is about that. If you have the same values, same background and interests and you do find true love, then maybe.
