I think that was more my mother's generation...or possibly where one grew up in this country. I had no friends that just got married and stayed home like mothers did when i was child. For one thing, houses were too expensive on just one income...same with putting child through decent college. Plus women including myself broke down many of the jobs that before only men worked in...and yes it was hard at times. But i did earn all the men I worked with respect.
My mom never said to me that I could do or be anything...i get it that she did not have that self esteem herself. But I did tell my nieces whom i helped raise from time they were talking that they could do or be anything. Where I did tell my nieces this from as soon as they could understand it. I am happy to say that both never once ever felt because they were women they could not do something.
I had to stop working due to illness, chronic disease. It was and is very hard on my self esteem. Especially when my husband asked for divorce and I could not afford to pay for my health care...or just things since i could not work.
Luckily, my husband loved me enough as friend to provide insurance etc for me...but i still hate that I could not do it for myself.
Anyways....I just thought i correct in my life experiences and all women I know around me at my age level or 5/7 yrs older.
I think women that graduated in early 1960's..some of them still felt that way about marriage was main thing to do...but even than things were a changing! Thankfully...and that is not to say that just being a mom is bad...it is great if that is what you want and can afford it.
I just am happy that we now do have choices so if we do get divorced we can take care of ourselves and be proud!
I also think since more than half of marriages do end in divorce that being single at older age is not looked at as bad thing. But i do know that inside i myself, feel bad about it. Like i failed or did not do the job well enough etc when i do know that logically this is stupid thinking. oh well working on it now! lol!!
When I say I've never married people do wonder (and some ask) what's wrong with me..........mind you - the chick beside me with 6 kids to 3 different men and two divorces...........that's perfectly fine............someone must have wanted her at some stage.
Thats the thing that shits me about this whole topic at this point of the day....
