A few years ago I got into a knock out, drag out fight with a juvenile that was about 6'3" and 280 pounds (Strong as hell too). We ended up in quite the situation because he had a gun in his waist band and I almost had to shoot him. If he had made one move down towards it I would have shot him, point blank, in the head. I got a black eye from the whole event.
I fought like hell to get him tried as an adult (he was 17) but they didn't try him as an adult. THey detained him in Juvenile Detention until he was 21. He was then released. A few months after he was released he walked up to another drug dealor on the streets and shot her in the head. He then turned the gun on himself.
If he was tried as an adult he would have still been in jail and that would have never happened.
I guess the thinking is when you're under 18, hey, everyone makes mistakes. Why should you have to pay for a mistake you made as a kid for the rest of your life?
But some kids and adults don't have any sense of limits. It's all a game to them.
Reminds me of my time in the military: Do whatever you want, just don't get caught doing it.
Maybe after he turns 18 and he gets busted for A&B on an officer, it'll finally stick.
There are some kids that deserve to be kept out of the system...but repeat offenders need to be prosecuted and prosecuted hard.
I forgot to mention that this kid was already on probation and parolle when all of these things happened. THey use a point system in Virginia and you really have to do something bad to meet the points...6 misdemeanor charges aren't enough!
