Types include secretory, osmotic, malabsorptive, infectious, and exudative. Secretory diarrhea is usually high-volume, and caused by bacterial toxins. Osmotic diarrhea is caused by unabsorbed particles exerting osmotic pressure to prevent reabsorption of water. Malabsorptive conditions involve mechanical and biochemical action. (Hypoabuminemia can lead to intestinal mucosa swelling, causing diarrhea.) Infectious agents invade intestinal mucosa, cause irritation and increase motility. (C-diff is the most common antibiotic associated nosocomial diarrhea.) Exudative diarrhea is caused by changes in mucosal integrity, epithelial loss or tissue destruction by radiation or chemotherapy.
