I found an awesome job, almost a dream job, and need to apply tomorrow. I hate writing cover letters, but I strongly believe they are a vital first impression. I hate the standard crap. Does anyone have any innovative, creative suggestions?

I think the point I'm trying to make is to think back to anything that would be applicable but catch their attention. You never know what's going to work. Good luck!
I would keep it to a short paragraph saying how excited you are to be working on technical jobs that offer support of the environment.

I would very much like to express my interest in the Mechanical Design Technician I position detailed on the University of Connecticut web site. The Rankin Laboratory and all the other associated programs at the Marine Sciences and Technology Center are absolutely fascinating to me, and I would relish the opportunity to offer everything I can to support the incredible learning programs at Uconn.
My prior responsibilities have included maintaining critical wastewater treatment operations in a Failure Is Not An Option environment. I have honed my technical resourcefulness and creative problem solving which are essential when caring for and upgrading an aging system. I have been honored to work along side some of the best technicians and engineers in the world while supporting construction and maintenance of wind turbines across the United States and Canada. I have spent countless hours interpreting diagrams and specifications from engineers and equipment suppliers to affect new installations and repairs in the field, much of the time with little to no supervision. Im very confident my experience commissioning, testing and repairing a myriad of sensors and other monitoring equipment fits very well with the requirements of this position.
In all previous experiences I have earned a reputation for a strong sense of responsibility, meticulous attention to detail, and exceptional interpersonal skills when dealing with high value customer and contractor representatives, as well as coworkers and superiors. Over 12 years of technical professionalism in many different areas of industrial maintenance and operations has given me the experience to excel in any challenge or opportunity; which to me are one in the same.
