i was diagnosed with anxiety attacks back when i was coping with being raped. i learned coping mechanisms thru my therapist that helped me and my particular triggers. have you tried doing that? anxiety in my opinion magnified what i thought was less in me than someone else and really overwhelmed me. so for me it boiled down to again, my favorite topic, self esteem. so maybe therapy for you? self help books? until i coped with it in my situation i wasnt able to go out at all. i could face it head on but only do so much of the work by myself. best of luck.
i keep a light on when i sleep. out in the kitchen. i never sleep in the dark. no matter where i am. if i do, i end up having nightmares and i wake up in a panic. i can have nightmares regardless, but if i wake up and the lights on in the kitchen, i adjust quicker.
i keep my cell phone with me. everywhere. charged. its my safety net. if i feel in danger i reach for it. it takes less than a second to dial 911. when my exhusband shut off my cell phone no less than 5 times in our marriage i had a fit. i have 3 extra cell phones from going up to walmart and buying prepaid plans. i have lost this cell phone twice and had to focus with every fiber of my being to find it - it was hard for me to even go in the apartment without it.
those are coping mechanisms to me. yours may be different. its a different situation. but panic is panic. after reading this, i realized i am tons better off than i used to be, but i am always afraid- i am always prepared to get hurt again (raped again). interesting. best of luck to you.
