OK, seriously pissed off. My mother had a stroke last month and I took a week off 4 days of work. I should have and could have taken off more time but, felt guilty because we are so busy implementing a new program for 3/1. Well my Mom is not doing so well and requires 24 hours care. I am my Mother's only child. She wants and needs me now. She wants to get her affairs in order, living will, proxy, power of atty. She lives in a house and needs better suitable arrangements. To make a long story short, I decided to take a leave from my job FMLA, hey that is what it is for right? Well my boss said, this is not a good time and you are going to miss the implementation of the EV program and I said, yes, I know, I know but, I only have one mother and she needs me. She OK and hung up... WTF.

You have to do what is right for you and mom. Chances are your boss has never been in this situation and cannot be empathetic. You are a good daughter to be there for mom.

I lost my mom in 2011 - my job downsized me 10 days b/4 she passed away - jobs come and go - we can't replace people.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

People are greater than possessions. We can get another Job, make another Dollar, but we cannot get time back .. Prayers for your mom!

thanks, I am still in shock. NO, I'm sorry, NO, you poor thing, how are you doing, nothing just you are going to miss the implementation of the Ev program. Who gives a F%%k about that.

Hi Janice, what I discovered when I broke the major bone in my back and had temporary paralysis for 3 days from under the chest all the way down and was in the hospital for a week was that FMLA was only applicable for offices with 50 or more workers and offices with less than that didn't have to recognize it. That was a while back and I don't know if that has changed, but Federal law had many provisions for employers with 50 plus employees. You want to check out what Federal Law provides now depending on how many workers.

Fifteen years ago, I began a new job during my Mom's long term illness. She began getting worse within my first week there.

My FIRST day on the job, there were airline tickets sitting on my desk.....to Brazil, Germany, and Austria. The trip itinerary was 3-4 weeks.

I was VERY uncomfortable about going on the trip and thought it was pushy and inappropriate for my new boss to make these arrangements for me. However, I was AFRAID to confront my new boss as he had high expectations from me.

I decided to go on the trip without complaint, and my Mom died within 2 weeks of my return. I should have been there with her in her last days.

Whenever I think of my Mom or that company (which later laid me off), I regret my decision.

You are doing the right thing Janice. Follow the FMLA requirements to the letter, and thank your boss when you return (EVEN THOUGH SHE IS A SELFISH BITCH!).

Family first. Period. End of story. The workplace won't burn to the ground if you aren't there, but you you only have one mother.

To hell with them. Businesses are only worried about business. At the end of the day they are only worried about saving themselves. This time with your mom is precious and god forbid if passes they will be nice to you for a bit but will not give you a second thought after a while. Its a shame but do whats right for you and your mom.

If you need to go to HR (as a last resort).

I hope she gets better

Wow I can't believe your boss. What a dick. My boss was considered to be a bitch but even she gave someone the day off when their cat died.

I agree with the others, family is much more important than any job. My thoughts are with you and your mom. I know you will have a difficult job ahead of you. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. If you don't mind me asking, how has the stroke affected your mom? Is there any rehab potential?

I know this is going to sound weird, but I feel more sorry for your boss.

To lack compassion, or at least not express it, for you and your mom speaks of a very, very emotionally confused person.

On the other hand your priorities are in order. You _know_ what's truly important in life.

thanks all.... KAW1962, the stroke effected her left side, so loss of movement on that side, also, some vision loss on left side and memory. Like anything she can heal but, she is stressing herself out because things are not in order, like Will, Proxy, Power of Atty and etc. They have her on anti anxiety medicine or anti depressants. She is used to doing everything and she cannot.
