Just broke up with someone or in the midst of a difficult divorce? Breaking up is difficult no matter what the circumstances are. They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.
My ex has many of the traits and experienced some of the same incidents as the others above. I also dated a man briefly, who is textbook. I have witness some bizarre emotional reactions from both.
And somehow, when you are in their presence, your the one who feels like a crazy person.
It would not be something that only shows up part way through a marriage or in a certain phase in life.
People with Narcissistic Personality Disorder are different than just your run of the mill jerk in the following ways:
- a PROFOUND lack of empathy
- an inability to grow to any true emotional or spiritual depth
- an inability to consistently sustain positive change
- an inability to have insight about how one's behavior negatively affects others
Did you feel regularly baffled or confused by his behavior? Did you start feeling like you couldn't trust your own judgement or that you might be losing your mind? When you tried to resolve a disagreement, did you feel like a dog chasing its own tail because he was more concerned about avoiding blame than resolving anything? Did he seem like Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde because he could be a wonderful man when he wanted something from you and then turned into a monster after his needs were met. Was he obsessed with money, power, and/or sex? Did he talk about his skills or accomplishments as though he was a brain surgeon or deserved the nobel prize? Was he more concerned about the opinion of other people than about your feelings? Did he ignore rules or laws as though they applied to other people and not to him? Did he behave as though he is more important than other people (e.g. unacceptable to have to wait in line, traffic, crowds, etc.)? Did he ever make statements about himself that indicated he believed he was speical or superior to other people? Does he view women in a conflicting way that shows both disdain and desire?
I could go on and on....
(sad)
Oh yes! The LIES! My all-time eye roller was when I confronted my runaway H (now X) with a receipt from a luxury hotel suite in NYC where he spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with the OW. He said, "It's NOT what you think!"
I laughed in his face...took that damning evidence all the way to court and took HIM to the cleaners!.
Sometimes they are not so obvious. I always wondered why I made no friends. We moved a lot and the ex was turning down invitations and saying it was me that didn't socialize.
He told the lies of an 8 year old little boy that weren't worth checking on. Until he felt entitled to comitt bigamy and not tell me I was sharing him with someone else.
When I read up on Narcissism it all fell into place. So many little silly things he did that seemed minor were one big problem.
The thing you have to realize is they get worse as they age. They are afraid of getting old and that's why he is now married to someone twenty years younger than him.
There is no fixing them. No way to make them well and whole. I've seen a Narcissistic rage a few times in my 33 year marriage. Not a pretty thing to go thru. The lies, the manipulation, the serial cheating, the entitlement he hid from me and let it out at work. Too much
I lucked into a therapist who treated people with Narcissism. He was the one who told me the ex had probably married while he was overseas. He had and we are now divorced.
ugh
I am so glad I'm out.
Admiration for all their worng doings, but remember only you and world know about the wrong doing, for them they did it by keeping only your interest in mind.
They are one very manipulative individual who looks after themselves only.....
