I was going through some old books that I had on a shelf today. As I was organizing things, a picture fell out.
It was one of my ex.
I looked at it, and my first thought was Holy Sh*t!!!
It was a picture of him in Egypt, standing on a river bed in the sand. Dashingly handsome in uniform with his red beret.
My son looks identical to him ..other than my son is blonde haired and blue eyed, rather than dark features. Same broad shoulders and powerful legs, same crooked smile, same squared jaw line.
Wow... just wow. I know each and every day that I look at my beautiful child I see a glimpse of his "dad"
Some days its hard...some days it is easier.
My ex is not well and very broken, but I always wish him the best on his journey.
How did I get a child with so much lightness and sparkle from someone so dark?....
Yep, I sure did get the best part of the deal.

whether its genetic
or because of how you love him
he gets to take that little bit of his dad with him into a much better place
a much lighter life
hopefully his father might see and recognize it in him
often family members can help soothe some very old and deep wounds for one another just by being themselves while we watch
I have made peace with all of those things.
Maybe some day down the line when his dad is old and grey those things will surface...
Its just uncanny sometimes..the resemblance...
I cant take full responsibility for his lightness....it does take 2. Im just amazed at times.
