Breakups & Divorce Support Group
Just broke up with someone or in the midst of a difficult divorce? Breaking up is difficult no matter what the circumstances are. They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.
My suggestion is look for apartments in a school district that you like. Then either put the house up for sale, or see if he wants it in the settlement. The family savings will still have to be split...I know you see it as yours exclusively, but it was gotten during the marriage so it's communal. You'll probably also have to pay alimony for a time. It WILL be hard financially...but that's the way it is in divorce.
As for child support...he WILL have to pay. The STATE doesn't let him get out of that. For now, it won't be much, and the alimony will off-set it (you'll likely just be paying less in alimony for a time.)
Sorry. And I get it. I get that it's not fair. But my advice is to deal with what's most likely to be the reality. Once on your own, you can work to get yourself on better financial footing.
Best of luck,
Patti
Do you get sole custody of your daughter? I can't believe someone so dirty, who is refusing to do the best thing for daughter (ie, let you pay for private school) AND refusing to pay any child support on top of that has any right to his child, but I'm betting he's getting some custody in the deal...is that something you can play him off of? Surely if you did go to court you would get more custody if that is the kind of person he is. It's a nasty bit but if he's not playing fair, you shouldn't have to either.
Financially...
1. What is your career like? Do you get regular raises? What would you think if your daughter did public school for a year or two, before education really gets serious? You could save up and maybe you'd even be making enough by then to straight up cover it plus whatever the jerk takes you for. Can you ask your boss for a raise right now? (It's an intimidating question, but it really never hurts to ask. Check out Glass Door and see what the average going rate for your job is - you may really deserve one!)
2. With Brexit, now is a GREAT time to refinance your mortgage. (I know, the last thing you want is another legal involvement, but something to consider)
3. This is a silly sounding one, but I recently started using a website called You Need A Budget. If you have time (ha, cause free time is so easy to come by as a working mom, right? lol) you can try setting it up. It really helped me see where my money was going and it does some great work with goals and debt all that kind of thing. It's free for the first month but then it is $5/month though. But maybe you could check it out? It might make you realize you can cut some things to cover others, or it might at least help show you how big the difference is between what you have and what you need.
Serious hugs for you, so sorry you have to go through this. :(
