I am usually giving advice here, but it's good to seek it, too! So here I am.
I am 29 years old. I was in a very serious relationship from the ages of 20 to 27. When we broke up, it was expected, but still devastating. I spent almost an entire year grieving and healing. For the last year, I have felt that I am ready to date again, to find 'the one,' etc. But I can't find ANYONE I'm interested in!
I have tried online dating, and have met some nice people, but in the end, I haven't been romantically interested in any of them. I did date someone (met through a mutual friend) for two months at the tail-end of last year, who I really cared about, but it became apparent he was a jerk and that ended before it really even began.
Basically, I feel as though I have a good head on my shoulders, and I know my ex was bad for me. But I miss the mental/intellectual connection we shared. I'm sure it's not uncommon, but we truly were best friends. We could make each other laugh all day long. I find myself going on dates and feeling empty because I don't share that connection with anyone else. I usually give it a few dates to make sure I'm not being too quick to judgment, but it never ends up being there. I'm starting to think there's something wrong with me! I don't feel the 'clock' ticking or whatever, I just want to feel that connection with someone again. My best friend recently got married and I absolutely adore her husband, and their relationship. I want to find someone like that. I felt I had that with my ex, but he just could not step up to the plate when it came to responsibility. He was just not ready to be an adult.
I just moved to a new town. I am looking forward to making a good group of new friends before I look for a relationship, but it's almost harder to make friends than it is to date! I have been on a few dates so far, and I would love to remain friends with them, but I guess it doesn't work like that, which is understandable. How do you even make friends when you're 30?! I know it's all about 'putting yourself out there' but I am so shy when it comes to new situations. I know what I need to do, I just need to make myself do it!

With regards to meeting people as friends; have you tried www.meetup.com? It's a website that encourages people of like ages to start meet up groups. There are all kinds of sub groups based on what your interests are. You can even organize your own meet up group if you're so inclined. It's not a dating website but I have heard of people in meet up groups who have made a romantic connection. You kind of get a chance to meet people and get to be friends first, then if you have a love connection you can go for it. Or you can just meet a few single women in your age group that have like interests. Check it out.
