We are going through a divorce without lawyers and are getting along for the most part. Our medical insurance has always been with my employer and they have always covered about 80% of the cost. Now with times the way they are, my employer has told me they will not be able to help with the cost of insurance anymore and while it's still offered, anything above and beyond single coverage will have to be paid by me.

I was paying about $60 per check for family coverage. Now for just myself and my daughter, the cost will be about $80 per check and the cost for family coverage to include my ex would be about $205 per check. I know you are not supposed to drop your spouse from your insurance until the divorce is final, but what happens in this case? I can't afford to pay that much to include him and honestly I'm lucky to get any child support from him, so I can't count on him paying the extra between the employee and child versus family coverage. I won't be able to pay my bills if I have to pay it all - anyone had a similar situation??
