In any case, it was wrong and very immature of him to toy with someone elses life, but if he's around your age I'd also chalk that up to immaturity and lack of experience.
Your hopes have been dashed and it's very disappointing and disillusioning.
I would not be in contact with him to further distort things until you grieve and process this.

Someone up there may just have been saving you from something in the future you're not aware of yet but would not have been good for you
A MAN knows what he wants, doesn't jerk other people around and doesn't waffle back and forth at the expense of others.
Sounds like he wants the good times, he'd like to be ready, but knows on some level he's not.
Like I said, you dodged a bullet. Doesn't feel like it now, but you could have ended up here in two years with a baby looking at a divorce very easily.
Time. We just go through loss and dissapointment and it takes time
