I am NOT saying that you have to tolerate it. That is your choice. If he is seeking help however, taking his meds, going to counseling, and so on, then it does sound like he sincerely wants to be better. I would say that the answer to the question of whether or not it is being used as a manipulation tactic is whether he is asking you to excuse his behavior or forgive him for it.

Once you have a handle on his mental illness, you can have a better idea of what goes on and whether you want to deal with his disorder. It's challenging at the very least. Good luck.
