Okay, so here is the mindbogglingly important question of the day. When do I change my Facebook status to read 'single'? My wife and I are in divorce mediation, and we likely WON'T actually get a divorce for insurance purposes. She has mostly moved out even though most of her furniture is here, but she still visits at least once a week because she has an art class down here. There really isn't likely to be an official "divorce" date, but we really aren't together anymore, either. Our current status is, "It's Complicated." Has anyone else faced a similar conundrum?

why not put it's complicated or leave it blank. are you on the prowl for someone new already? facebook status is really not that important anyways

It's not so much that I'm interested in "being on the prowl." It's more that after all these years of a difficult marriage that I am ready to declare myself as free.

I just deactivated my account. It's been a good move, I recommend it to avoid those random, bizarre posts about "feeling so bad for you, etc., what can I do?" and/or having to see everyone else's happy pictures of family picnics, babies, etc (not that I am not happy for them) but right now I need to focus on me. Facebook is a great gossip tool and those that are not your true friends may find ways to use it against you. At least delete those you don't trust or just focus more on recovery and moving forward, that has been my goal and I love this forum, it allows me to do that and not miss the social interaction I got with FB, just my personal opinion for the short-run

Mine says SEPARATED. I changed it when I noticed he did.

when we were apart but not legally separated I changed it to "it's complicated"

now we are legally separated and it still is that way..

who cares what facebook status you are anyway? does anybody look at that?

I don't know. It probably says something disturbingly weird about me, but somehow announcing it on Facebook makes the whole thing, "official". Sad, I know.

once i break up with my boyfriend (which is in the near future) i will probably be making my relationship status blank for a while and hope no one notices. especially because some of his family are my facebook friends :/ ... right now the status is "engaged" and i'm getting irritated by all the "plan your wedding" ads on the side.

funny..I was thinking the same thing today about facebook...I'm not ready for the questions and comments yet. I like the idea of deactivating my account. I can always make a new one with my maiden name and invite those that are close to me to be my "friends". I'm not even sure what to do about my wedding ring. I left him only 2 weeks ago, but after today its clear that I will need to file divorce. I love my ring, though. Its not my original ring, that got to big when I lost weight a couple years ago. my mom "sold" him an antique ring (she deals in estate sales) for $5. I don't feel like he had invested himself in the ring, so I will probably wear it on my right hand, because I really like it.

hahaha, difficult question, facebook is indeed a place where we can decide our 'state of mind' and publically declare it.

why am i laughing? well i went on there to change my profile stuff and foudn that i already had separated as my status!! I actually did it ages ago - along with a fake birthdate and other changes - i wanted to experiment with how the adds would change,

i went from getting lose weight adds (why it is assuemd that if you are married you will be fat?!?!) and when i changed my status to single i got all the dating, meet other singles ads!

funnily enough att he time when i changed it to serparated ONLY ONE friend commented and she just "liked" my new status!

yuo could change it to single and any nosy annoying comments could be passed off as saying you got sick of the ads you were seeing?

or you could just proudly "own" your sngle status and quit avoiding the situation?

Personally, I don't show my status on Facebook. You can hide it. Its rather trivial in the greater scheme of life, don't you think?

sorry didn't read this whole thread but my first thought when I read this was that you are changed your FaceBook status to drive home some point or acknowledge that you are actually single, finally regardless of the proceedings. It is within you that feels this and the outside part of you that wants to make sure it is known, even to yourself.

just my thoughts on it...

I changed mine to be hidden and then changed it single. Then I made sure to go to my profile and delete the update so nobody could see it, it was embarrassing for me so I did it very early in the morning so nobody could possibly see it.
