Breakups & Divorce Support Group
Just broke up with someone or in the midst of a difficult divorce? Breaking up is difficult no matter what the circumstances are. They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.

I had a major epiphany last night. This entire so-called support system is nothing more than emotional masturbation. It is a Dumping Ground of Despair and wallowing in agony and (self) pity. It's marketed as a place of Collective Strength but frankly I don't think anyone's getting stronger at all. some of these people have been on this site for two years and more and are still pining over their exes. I am one of them granted it's only been about a month and a week for me but I've already made this realization, nobody here is getting stronger, its just a bunch of back -pats and hang- in- theres and these are random strangers who you assume are who they say they are. How many of these profiles are simply trolls or people who masquerade among those who are wallowing in legitimate suffering because some people just get a kick out of seeing car wrecks and that's what this place is full of: Emotional car accidents. Some people, in order to feel good about their own lives will deliberately misrepresent themselves just so they can slip amongst the herd amd observe the damage so they can feel better about their own dull lives and say "well at least I'm not them." how many these people are qualified to actually be dispensing information and advice? These are things you have to seriously consider. I do not believe any of these people are professionals some of them are fakes and some of them are other people who are emotionally stuck in life and they're not in the position to be able to help anybody because they can't even help themselves. Every second we spend on sites like this is a second that we are taking away from our real lives. Some of us have children who depend on us and I understand sometimes you are just banging out a couple of messages on down time but think about how much more you could accomplish if you spent all of this time on anything constructive, whether it's cleaning your house, or managing your bank account/bills, or just meditating. Take a moment to sit back and become introspective. I understand things are what you make them, but that goes both ways. I'll explain. I've been wallowing over my wife who was treated me like shit for the last couple of years and started cheating on me about a year ago convinced me I was crazy and sent me to therapy which I went to in order to help our relationship and it turned out I was not crazy I was right all along. Emotional abusers and manipulators are everywhere in society and they see weak people coming a mile away, and by weak I mean optimistic, emotionally vulnerable, genuine human beings who have the naive expectation that if you just give someone a chance they'll do the right thing and unfortunately the world is not that way. Turn on the news and you will see nothing but Carnage and con artists and death and all kinds of terrible stuff. This isn't about blasting the media, this is about understanding what is real in life. A lot of us have a lot going on, we have shit to do we have lives to rebuild and taking time away from The Real World so we can go into the virtual world and pour out our hearts assuming we even are who we say we are is nothing but wasted time. Its way easier to sit in front of a computer screen than running errands, managing a family, or looking inside and fixing ourselves. "None but ourselves can free our mind" -Marley. Our life clocks are ticking away, we are losing sand in the Hourglass every second of every day. I do not believe I will be logging on to this site much if at all anymore. For those of you pining over your ex's who have betrayed you, you have to realize the real problem is you. That includes me. I have concocted a fantasy in my mind about who I thought this person was and I allowed them to manipulate me and control me for the last decade. I've lost my entire twenties to this woman. And it's not her fault she's a devious bitch. You can't ask the crocodile why is it eating you, its just their nature. The real question is why are you letting it? We have all made mistakes in judgment, we have allowed ourselves to become emotionally vulnerable around people who didn't deserve it because we wanted to believe they are who we thought they were and eventually the cookie crumbled and all was revealed to be dust not sugar and flour. I'm not saying we deserve to be cheated on what I am saying is we have allowed ourselves to, and put ourselves in the position to be used to be stepped on and to be taken advantage of. I'm not saying we deserved it, life is not about what you deserve. To borrow a house of cards quote we are all entitled to nothing. I'm getting a little existential here but it is all real and it's all true. Let me reiterate every second we spend away from our real lives allowing ourselves to suffer is time we don't have. We don't have this luxury. For those of you in the breakups and divorce Group take a glance at the widows and widowers group and I'm going to tell you right now some of them I know for a fact are fake profiles, but some of them are real. Some of these people have lost their loved ones at a time they felt was too early and one day that's going to be us..both losing and being lost, and it's going to come sooner than we're going to want it, and sooner than we think. No one has ever sat in the Cancer hospice Ward and thought to themselves I wish I just had more time to blog and post. I get what the idea of this forum is supposed to be, but how its actually used, for the people that this attracts, whether it's the car-wreck watchers or the people with legitimate sorrow in their hearts I say to you go out and live your lives and DO something. Make, build, create, grow and help to grow and that is how you will heal. I came to this realization in 4 weeks some of these people have been on the site for years and they keep going on and on about how they can't go on, and how they're so upset, and they're so distraught and I'm sure they are, but there are seven freaking billion people in the world(and always growing) there's work to be done, and there are quite a few fish in the pond. Some of them are sharks and barracudas and that's just the way it is. Get yourself out of the house and DO. I cannot guarantee you will even be "successful" in life, the only guarantee in life in death. You have to put yourself in the position that gives you the greatest chance for being happy, or even just content. And sitting in your homes and wallowing in suffering like I have been is a huge freaking waste of time. I feel so much better having been shaken back to reality and don't get me wrong my reality still sucks but by focusing on the negative all I'm doing is blinding myself to the unforseen positive and some of you have mentioned that, but at the same time here you are talking. Masturbation (in the metaphorical sense) feels good, and its easy, human beings do it all the time, but it's not productive in the sense that it doesnt compare with the real thing. It doesn't help us, it's not the same as living life and experiencing new things, or even old things we had forgotten we loved that we put on the back burner when we put these devious people in the center of our lives. And WE did that. Some people are just bad/selfish/devious, and they see us coming a freaking mile away and the crappiest part of this is familiarity breeds comfort so some of you are going to be attracted to someone who's just like your ex and you're only going to repeat this pattern. Like those women who repeatedly date abusers who beat them and then they finally get away and meet a new guy who only beats them harder. This isn't about what's right or deserved, life is not about either of those things, this is about recognizing patterns and behaviors that we have imposed upon ourselves. The problem is the type that we're attracted to. And I would know, every single major relationship in my life has ended in infidelity so the problem is I'm fundamentally attracted to cute -looking devious bitches and I assure you I am no masochist. This is probably the last post you're going to see from me for a while, I have kids who need me and a life to rebuild and I can't do it here. And I don't have the luxury of downtime. These are just digital words in space, they are literally nothing. My only hope is I can Inspire some people to read this become introspective and start to go out and live their lives once again. Its not long and it's not perfect but it's worth doing. Who knows? I may run into you one day and you'll never know it was me but you'll never run into anybody in these chat rooms, some of them aren't even real people, but imposters with their own ajendas. you have to meet people in the real world if you want to move on. it's time to break the cycle.
I agree with you.
1000%
If you feel this site is so horrible, delete your freaking account. Your negativity is not needed.
I've been around here 10 years...and I'll grant you that some of that is true.
BUT, I've also seen people pull themselves out of suicidal despair, stop bad habits, get over their divorces, remarry, have kids...live happily ever after.
What you make of this place is up to you.
If this place isn't helping you...it's up to you to move on. I don't see how venting at those that ARE getting help is very nice.
It's a bit like saying since some people would be dead if they wore a seat belt (my ex was in an accident where the front seat was crushed, he wasn't wearing a belt and was thrown into the back)...so because some people are hurt...most people shouldn't do that (I have more stories of lives saved).
That's NOT an exaggeration. This place was literally a lifesaver for me.
(Oh and I made it over to that "promised land" of getting along with my ex, but not being romantically attached anymore.)
People come to these realizations in their own, or Gods, time.
In my case the site was a convenient distraction from facing some issues.
As I stated, we go when we're ready.
Thanks for YOUR positive input though! Seems you may have some issues of your own that could use addressing.
The OP has every right to share his feelings.
You also know when to move on with life.
For every one of you and Patti there are a hundred negative influences.
If you're weak and vulnerable, it can be an unhealthy crutch like any other addiction.
I've not been here very long, and it does seem like a huge dumping ground, to a degree. In all fairness, I've read a few things where I simply have no idea how to respond, except to suggest that PROFESSIONAL help should be sought immediately.
I came here because I've been working on myself, utilizing videos, books, and other resources as a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I'm doing this because I don't have insurance and cannot afford therapy. My blog is a document of my trip from below rock-bottom to right now. For those who won't be reading it, the TL;DR is that I was in a really bad place, but as of now I feel as if I am on the up-swing, I'm in a relatively good place, and I'm looking for a next level. So far, what I'm finding is that there may not be a next level.
One of the cornerstones of my Codependency was that I truly LOVED being the victim of my abuser. That is, I'd go to work and tell anyone who would listen about "what she did to me last night." I had THE worst story, and nobody was going to out-do my misery.
Another cornerstone was that I was still carrying myself like a helpless child. I see lots of that here, and it does affect me a bit.
I try to have SOME sympathy for people with bad stories, but it is becoming difficult. But when someone complains about how (s)he is abusive, wants me out, doesn't love me, etc., BUT I STILL LOVE THEM, then all I want to do is tell them to stop with the junior high school crap and grow up. Try to get some self-respect, be an adult, and live THIS ONE LIFE that we have. There is only ONE chance, and that's it.
I lost most of my 20s, 30s, and some of my 40s to my cry-baby, whiny, helpless victim of an inner child, and I'll be damned if I'm going to end up going to the grave like this.
The most interesting thing that I've noticed about myself is the more healthy my mind and emotions get, and the more I grow up, the more CONTEMPT I have for my old self. Wah, I didn't have any friends. Well, truth be told, I'd not be friends with the old me, either. He was a whiny, wet sock that would do nothing for me, except maybe drag me down. Who would want that?
I try to not hold this contempt for others, especially those who are whining about an abusive ex whom they still "love" for some reason. It's hard, because I see the old me in them; that whiner who hands the abuser a stick, stands there, and complains about being hit by a stick. I know it's a sickness. I've been there, I've done that, and in some ways I am still paying for the t-shirt, so to speak.
Often times, I respond with things that might be hard to read/hear, and I do that because someone told me something I didn't want to hear, and it changed my life. I'm convinced that his words and his observation that I "loved being the victim" are what put me on the fast track to getting my act together.
The old Codependent me would want to try to rescue some of the people here. I've noticed that I don't feel the desire to rescue others, so if nothing else, this forum has given me confirmation that I've made some progress in that regard.
Sometimes I feel like grabbing some of the people here by the shoulders, shaking them, and telling them to stop being a whiny child and grow up. This is typically when I log off and forget about it, because I know that it will not make a difference. At the same time, I wonder if anything that I write here will ever make a difference for anyone. I don't lose sleep over it, but it has me thinking about how I'm spending my time with regard to continued recovery.
I'll close with this: It feels GOOD to not want to rescue others. It feels GOOD to feel my self-esteem, self-worth, and confidence starting to grow. It feels GREAT to feel like an adult who is in charge of his own destiny. Yes, I think the idea that "we're not in control and need to hand over the reins to a higher power" is both silly and childish, and I contend that it caters to the inner child and keeps that inner child active and alive. How can that possibly be helpful?
It's not helpful.
Maybe I'll stick around. Maybe not. I need to think about it, but it won't be some dramatic Facebook-style nobody-loves-me type of thing. It's all about how we spend our time getting better.
Ask yourself: Do you want HELP, or do you love being the victim? Do you want some advice, or do you want people to feel sorry for you? The answers to these questions will determine whether you're here for the right reasons, or if you're here to be a waste of time and space. It's up to you.
Best of luck.
i can. Whether Its support groups, therapist, church
whatever.
To me this is a Good a time to improve myself when
In enough pain many will seek Personal growth and
change but not until they hit rock bottom.
Posting and venting on here helps many of us get thru
the Day. Many times we burden people and they don't
Want to hear anymore and shut us down. We need To
vent and receive support. Joining healthy support groups
Like divorce care, 12 step groups, church and therapy
Help a lot too.
I needed help i was on rock bottom, i believe In hope and
giving love, support, strength and courage to others that
are still Struggling so they Can come to grips with all their
Own emotional Distress.
Divorce is nothing like anything i have ever encountered
Especially After a long term marriage. Grieving is not linear
and It takes time, patience and gentleness. I Still have some
depression, anxiety and stress.
God is in charge of me and he is the only one That can
sit in judgement of me and the right And wrongs of my
feelings and emotions and my recovery journey.
We are all different in our approach, on how To heal and
grow. I come from a emotional and healing approach,
Others believe in exercising it out of themselves and
Just moving On.
Thats their right to believe that, i have 60 years of muck To
wade thru, face and cope with first before any moving on
Is going to happen. HUGS
I think everyone has to find their own balance.
People making the OP "wrong"...eh, that's your opinion. We all have one.
What's interesting to me is the way he was attacked for having an opinion different than someone else's.
And anyone here who feels so powerless in their own life that they think they can lay down the how, the where and the when for someone else needs to start their own blog or website and get a grip.
This is the OP s personal realization.
I myself have noticed I'm relying too much on this place
I had/have a great support system, God, friends, family, a counselor BUT I really got most of my help on this board, so think what you want, but this place is a place for healing and venting when needed. And it's FREE!!! If you don't find what you need here, then maybe a different support group would work better for you.
You are welcome to read my previous posts and you can see how far I've come. I'm a real live person who went through the hardest thing ever and lived to tell about it and I will forever be grateful I stumbled upon DS when I did.
I was on this site about a year during then after my divorce. I got a lot of support and advice.
Everyone is different *shrugs*
