Instead of sneaking around and lying...they stayed friends. She grew up, and about 5 years later they started dating as both adults. At that point, it was no longer "too painful for her to let go". If things hadn't worked out...she'd have been free to leave.
It really wasn't about "him". Even though one feels grown up at 17...(and trust me, my friend had been through a LOT in life, and was rather grown up, with a job that was contributing to her living expenses and everything)....but you're still NOT grown up.
Those 5 years made a BIG difference.
My advice....if you're interested in a long term relationship...wait.
