You could have gone to a Doc in the box cheaper and they seem to care more, cause they have more time to care! I would not be too thrilled with being told "your bleeding" as a diagnosis.... There has to be a reason, and I would want to know the reason... I think I would have sat right there until they told me why! But that is just me! Hope you get better soon and I would really follow-up with my regular Primary Care Physician on Monday!

I work in a hospital. Have run with EMT's and worked in ER's for over 30 years. What did you want? Looks like you wanted it to me more serious than it was. Why?

I was worried that I began to acrew too many frequent flier miles from visits to the ER in the past few years. Took me 28 years to get away from them and I have been going back to them once a year since then!

Lady, why are you so antagonistic? He didn't say he wanted it to be more serious, but after sitting there and paying for medical care, I think he thinks that he got jilted!

With the state of the economy as it is and people loosing their jobs many more people are using ER's as urgent care clinics. And not paying! We get people with sore throats, infections that have been going on for months, and "pains" that are similar to stuff they saw on Good Morning America. Then they bitch because the person coming in with a true stroke or heart attack AFTER them got taken care of BEFORE them! And they had to wait. Do you think you were misdiagnosed or do you think that everyone who goes to the ER should be admitted and have a portion of their colon resected????

Oh I didn't want it to be more serious....a GI BLeed can take you out....I just thought that they would "scope" out the situation....but I guess I am pissed that I had to be there in the first place....I have had Bleeding ulcers in tha past and ended up in ICU....so I just wanted to make sure that I am OK....but he is the Doc....just a lousy day in general

It's hard, because ERs have becoma a major source of primary care for people that are uninsured or underinsured, and those that can't get into their doctor any time soon.

That leaves ERs overwhelmed with patients and understaffed. That leaves them with little time and resources to make diagnosis and run tests. The ERs goal is to address urgent medical issues. Once they've determined that there is not an urgent need, they want you to go to your regular physician for treatment, where you can be followed.

I too work in a hospital, I know the priorities.... I also know as do you that a person on blood thinners and having a bleeder can be a disaster waiting to happen.....I'm just sayin...

I think if your having GI bleeding and you've been in ICU for bleeding ulcers going to the emergency room is prudent.

Hell...I feel your pain! I went to my primary care physician and spent 4 hours in the waiting room and I HAD an appointment. He got called away on an emergency. That's the nature of the beast. I sat quietly and read a book being thankful that I have access to care that 98% of the planet doesn't have. Our country has gotten so used to fast food, fast everything...we forget what we have. The hospital I work in may go bankrupt and close then there will be NO EMERGENCY ROOM SERVICE. Maybe that will wake people up. You never know what you had till it's gone?

I understand Lady's frustration, after doing research on this subject.

However, Lady, it probably isn't necessary to take out your frustrations on pem. This isn't something personal, pem is just venting.

Pem, I think you absolutely did the right thing. GI bleeds can be dangerous and it's better have it checked than to wait until it's really bad.

I've worked in an ER. People using an ER for the common cold is nothing new. The economy has nothing to do with it.

But when someone presents with a history of GI bleeds, ulcers and a trip to the ICU, I would think they would be more careful. If you don't feel right, please call your doctor on call if possible. At the very least, call your doc first thing Monday to follow up.
