How many people here think that the Economy may have played a part in their divorce or their impending divorce?

I've been divorced for a long time so I can't blame the economy but I CAN saw we fought over the "control" of the money more than the actual spending of it. He wanted complete control of our finances while I made almost 65% of our income. I felt like a teenager with an allowance.... I had to justify every purchase I made.... I don't like being controlled.

I would never ever get a joint checking account and put all of my money into it. I made that mistake with my ex and it caused nothing but arguements. We both would argue about money that we have spent and the bloody thing was ungodly and horrible to manage. I had the duty of trying to keep up with the account and it caused so much pain and anxiety on me.

I've read two news articles in the past two months talking about how couples are postponing separation and divorce because of the economy.

Unfortunately, the articles also said that these same couples aren't really working on their marriages, they're just together because of finances.

Less while the money is just too tight to divorce, but probably More after the economy gets better again. Stress over money isn't known to help marriages.

Joint checking worked well for us. Heck we had a joint account for about 5 years Before we got married.

I think financial stress in general may have contributed.....but mostly it was his fucking around. The economy was just a lil icing on the cake...oh, so was the tax audit caused by the asshole. Yeah, 2008 sucked ass!

Nope, it's going down, people can't afford to split. Once things bounce back ,it will explode.

My attorney told me last the last 2 years,2007 and 2008, were an all time high for divorce for long terms marriages, including his and mine. The economy or money had little to do with mine, or his. A lot of marriages long term are at the point that you are beginning to reap the rewards of long time invesments, equity in property etc.

There is an old adage, When you look at a problem, it can be about 3 things, Power, Money or Sex.. I think marriage is not immune from any of the 3.

I have heard people say that they could not maintain seperate residences or afford to right now, to divorce. I think if you are in a bad marriage or one partner wants out, you find a way no matter how bad the econony is. The divorce rate stays about the same, year in and year out, time will tell.

I am thinking that separation will increase....it costs money to divorce....and if lawyers are involved; then divorce may not happen; so I would think that a VERY long separation will occur.

Then again I got divorced.........divorces happen in any economy state

actually he and I never really fought about money. Could be because I don't spend money and he normally spent the majority. I think the only time we sort of fought about it was because I refused to put my money into a joint bank account. I have always maintained a separate account. I had big trust issues and it took me 10 years to just get him a bank card from my account.

I actually think because the economy it forces people to stay married simply because they can't afford a divorce or to live in separate houses. That doesn't mean they are happy and aren't living separate lives until they can afford a divorce tats just saying they are staying miserable or forcing them to work things out. Who knows maybe this is what they needed to make things work.

Decrease in divorce, according to the statistics. Very simple reason: divorce is f**king expensive. People can't afford it. They dig deep to put up with the biatch (or dickhead) because they know they can't afford to divorce him/her....
