So yesterday was an interesting night to say the least. I'm in the process of learning about religion, and am really trying to understand the concepts that revolve around religion, and finding God. It hasn't been easy for me, mainly due to my own roadblocks I think, but I'm continuing to pursue it because I feel so empty inside. Yesterday's sermon was about finding inner peace with God, and by knowing the true meaning of Christmas, and accepting that Jesus was born and died for all of our sins, that instead of using Christmas as a time of year to be stressed out over gifts and family and gatherings, we should rather be at peace with ourselves. This is a concept I don't fully understand, but it struck a cord with me.
I've never really experienced inner peace aside from going into a trance. Inside me, it would appear to be so much darkness. In me, I find that the only way my brain turns off is if I go into a trance, normally my music. Meditation is way too hard for me to achieve anymore, partly due to my brain, partly due to the required breathing practices I was taught. It dawned on my last night, while I was on my way home from a game night with my friends, that inside it is just chaos. I had wondered if it was because of my lack of faith, or just the fact that so much has happened in my life over the years.
Chaos, darkness, sadness, despair, all are feelings I can truly relate to, in a way that I don't find healthy. On the outside, I seem like a happy go lucky person, one who is content with life, and has a handle on things. But deep inside, I don't know if the same could be said. I find that when I pray, I normally go on a tangent in my head, and wind up breaking down emotionally, crying my eyes out, feeling overwhelmed with sorrow. It isn't a pleasant feeling to say the least, but I still try because of my deep desire to feel connected to God.
So last night, on the way home, me and my best friend were talking about this for probably two hours. Almost all the way home, and for about an hour or so outside my house. In the end, it came down to that I haven't let go of anything. I don't really understand the concept of letting go. The emotional pain is still attached to memories, and if I think about those memories, I will feel the pain inside. My brain also has this strange way of remembering all kinds of details, like dates, times, weather information, locations, in such detail it is as if it happened yesterday.
Trying not to be too graphic with her last night, I shared a story of when I was 13, and I was accused by my mother of abusing her, and was sent to a crisis center. They wound up eventually sending me to a foster home, and all that, but I didn't get into those details mainly because there is a lot of pain involved, and a lot of bad stuff happened there. Point is, if I let myself, like last night, I can remember every detail with such precision that is like it happened yesterday. She says I haven't left go of that, and in a weird way I agree. But on the flip side, I'm living with my mother, the one who lied and accused me of hitting her, and am very happy with her, and our relationship. These things don't come up anymore, and I don't relate to her with these memories. Isn't that the very definition of letting go?
So applying this to my life now, my ex, and all that she has done. I've forgiven her, I don't think of her too often, but there are nights where she pops in my head. I analyze, constantly analyzing. It does me no good in this instance, as I realize I can't fix my marriage, nor do I want to at this point. After the realization of what my marriage was, and the abuse I was enduring and didn't even realize, it is far better for me to be away from her. But that doesn't stop my brain from processing all this, over and over again, to the point of driving myself nuts sometimes. My friend claims that I haven't let her go either.
So I come here, mainly out of curiosity, but more overly out of my lack of understanding about this letting go concept. Do we ever really let go of things? How does one separate the emotional component from the memory? How does one let out the darkness that is inside them so that light may shine inside? Is light shining inside me now, and I just don't realize it? Personally speaking I feel like I'm overflowing with dark memories, with dark emotions, and while for some odd reason I'm not depressed or anything, I know it is all there.
So yea, any advice would be helpful. I definitely feel a bit lost, and confused by this whole concept. Emotional concepts like this are confusing to me. I'm sorry that this is so long, and kind of in a tangent like form. I didn't really have any other way to let it out, so I just let the words flow out of me. Thanks in advance for the advice, and as always, thank you for the support and help.

When sad memories illicit sadness in us when we remember them that is perfectly normal. When sad memories cause us to act in an unhealthy way or develop unhealthy relationships it is an unresolved issue.
Confronting those past issues is the path to healing. Part of that path is forgiveness, and that is something God teaches us at every turn. Letting Him into your life is a good thing. He wants to be there, and will never stop trying to be there. God forgives you for doing every bad thing that you do, no matter how bad. Can't you forgive those who did you wrong?
It sounds as if you have forgiven your mom, or at least most of the time you have. One thing I've noticed is that most days I have forgiven my stbx, but on certain days I get so angry at what she did... so forgiveness seems to come and go. I just have to work on truly forgiving, and for good.
I imagine that you have a very good memory. I do too, and I understand some of what you say. How you can remember details of events and conversations forever sometimes. Good memory is a curse, I always say that. It makes it harder to let things go, because we don't forget them. So we have to work harder at forgiving and moving on, and saying that those things in the past have no power over our future.

Inner Light Meditation is my favorite. As far as meditation and thoughts, disturbing or not, it's okay to have them. As a matter of fact it's very normal and meditation helps us to detach from our thoughts and treat them as only thoughts that we need not engage but only ackowledge and then move on. With enough practive this becomes easier.
It just takes time and effort. Meditation trains the mind just like exercise trains muscles.
As far as religion/spirituality, I could go on and on about that for pages and pages. ;-)
I do believe meditation can help you find more inner peace and thereby help in your spiritual journey too.
Luvmygirl, I have a horrible memory actually. There are days that I can't even remember what I had for breakfast, let alone plans, or well, anything that seems important. I do however, remember like it was yesterday all the weird traumatic stuff that has happened over the course of my life, and I find that part strange. From my understanding, most people strive to forget the traumatic stuff, but yet I retain it.
I have forgiven my mom. Completely. My mother and I have a great relationship now, that honestly wouldn't be as strong or as healthy as it is if my ex was still in the picture. In a weird way, my ex throwing me away is what kick started a lot of the healing, and her breaking her foot, and me taking care of her, and just spending time with her and talking really helped heal the damage that was caused so many moons ago.
I find that in general I'm very forgiving. Honestly, most of my friends, at one point or another have betrayed me, whether through the usual drama stuff, to more serious things like stealing stuff, or hacking my email. In the end though, I'm still good friends with them all, and have forgiven them for their trespasses against me. Was I mad in the moment, sure. Did it take months before I got over it and tried to mend the fence, sure, but I seem to always do that. Think it is just who I am as a person.
Itsabout, Thank you for your kind words. I agree memories in general are good. Even with my ex, there is a lot of positive memories in there, along with everything else. My childhood wasn't all bad, negative stuff, it is just what sticks out. I do have a lot of good memories too, like spending a summer with my father on a truck, learning about life as a trucker. That summer I'll always cherish.
I plan to keep exploring, and venturing into new things. I want to live life, and experience all I can, within my limits of course. In a strange way, I feel like I've been given a second chance, a chance to enjoy myself for once. And honestly, while I can be mopey some days, and definitely feel lonely, I haven't been this happy in probably 6 or so years now.
Sidestep, interesting counter. I honestly don't consider myself free. I feel there are times that I'm trapped in my own head. It might be imagination, but those memories are still there. I am curious why I feel such sorrow and pain from them, even after all this time. I can understand the ones about my ex, as it is only 8 months, but I'd think 15+ years the pain shouldn't be there.
It is strange to me. I don't like drama, but I kind of see your point. Maybe I'm self-inducing it. And if I am, I wonder why I'm doing such a silly thing. I'll have to take a look inside, and sort out why I might be doing that. Bad when you are self-inflicting your own wounds to yourself.
JustA, interesting links. I read over some of it, and it looks like it might be possible for me to meditate. I'm going to try a couple of those out tomorrow, when I'm home alone, and see how it goes. Thanks for sharing them with me. I greatly appreciate it.
Being free though, that is definitely a state of mind. Right now, I feel anything but free. I have very little control over my life right now. I can wish it, and believe that I am free all I want, but I'm tethered quite in place, bound by my own circumstances. I am actively moving myself closer to the goal of being free again, but I sense it will take years for that to happen.
I hope this helps! Take Care!
I'm comfortable where I am, don't get me wrong. No tensions or stress in my living situation, and aside for a few hundred dollars for rent, I enjoy a lot of luxury for that meager price. So don't get me wrong, things are not bad. I guess in a way, I wish I was on my own again. I wish I had the ability to get a car. I'm saving now for one, but it will take probably 5-6 more months for me to get one. I do what I can.
1, I'm pretty amazing. People enjoy me, my company, my opinions, my existence.
2. I enjoy me, my company, my opinions, and my existence.
3. My son gets the best of both of us, even if it's separately, which, for me, is far better than living in a house that's miserable
4. I learned I can do more, be more, aspire to more than I gave myself credit for.
5. I am better off financially, I am more balanced, I am a complete person.
One of the biggest things I took out of letting go is that i have struck the balance of being willing to accept my Ex as someone in my life, via my son. That, while he wasn't a good husband, he is a good father. I have learned that no matter how bad it gets, it won't break us.
I've learned that all these tools, values, morals I was raised with, when called into question, are things I will stick by.
If we allow the past to constantly dictate our present, then we aren't living...we are robbing ourselves of our own potential. I think if everyone took a moment to look inward, the world would be a much happier and well-rounded and honest place.
