So my ex decided to contact me on Valentine's Day through text for the first time since hanging up on me the week before Christmas, to say this:
"It hurts not having you in my everyday. I'm sure you didn't want to hear from me. I just wish I knew how you were doing. For whatever it's worth.. Happy Valentine's Day."
I was furious at first but through the conversation I was able to say some things I didnt get a chance to before. I took the high road. He pointed out that he was looking for txts and calls from me during this time but I didn't contact him either. Just some background - He hung up on me after I said I was not going to continue to put in effort if he wasnt willing to do the same. And after that he never called to give me the details on the time and location of the pastoral counseling appointment he said he set up for the following weekend, and I didnt hear one word from him over the holidays. I felt I was always the one putting in effort to make things right and that if he wanted to show the effort that I was asking for that he would contact me and that if not I needed to move on.
Through the txt convo he said there has been no one else, all of his effort has been tied up in his custody battle and interviewing for a new position, that he misses me greatly, that I have been the biggest part of his life for the last 5 yrs but he "just couldnt take the hurtful words from me", that I will always hold "the most important part of his heart", that I changed him and his life, that he wishes he never caused me pain by cheating in the beginning because we'd be together happy now that he's changed, thanked me for "taking care of him from start to finish", that he prays for success, love, peace, and happiness in my future, and a sad crying emoticon followed by "I've been holding back these tears too long".
I told him that there was a lot of unhealthy unresolved stuff underneath with him that was spilling over into my life and after years of effort on my part I had to leave after I saw he was not willing to even confront them (I have been in counseling, CoDA, and doing constant reading for the last two years to figure out how to improve the relationship, we went to counseling together for a short period of time for verbal abuse until he lied in a session), that if he was happy with himself that I'm the one who needed to leave, and that I need to be with a partner who can give me the compassion and support that I give to them. He simply responded with: "Ok. I see." Which just re-confirms his avoidance and unwillingness to make an effort.
Even though I feel like I finally got the closure I wanted, I have felt like crap every day since. It's like he just doesnt get it that there are things he needs to take care of on his end in order for a relationship to work. He did change but he thinks that just because he stopped cheating that he did his part and there's nothing else wrong. Verbal abuse, avoidance, and lack of empathy will be unhealthy in any relationship he enters. It's like he doesnt even process what I say to him. The only thing he takes responsibility for is the cheating.
I feel like I got closure but this still hurts like hell because when it was good it felt like paradise I'd never before known and I can run right back but I'll just be making a deal with the devil for some temporary relief from this heartwrenching pain. So I know I can't.
I feel like I was better off before the "closure"

Just thought I would join this group now that I am a widower. My wife passed away May 28th. She was "The Wind Beneath My Wings". When I met her, I was a drunken, dope smoking, fighting, hell raising biker. She told me if I could get rid of the inner storm within me, that I could be a blessing to people. God placed her in my path to stop me. I have been drug and alcohol free now for 53...

My husband and I got our foster license last month, after 3 years of hard work (we had to start over multiple times due to family dramas and Mom's open heart surgery). We spent a year preparing the whole house, guest rooms, and children's bathroom for older kids of 7 yr old and up. Then we got a call that we have been approved to receive twin newborn premies. What, what?!! Babies!? Premies?!...

my ex contactd me yesterday via text saying he wants to start over and live fulfilling life with me. i said i didn't think i could trust him again, so no.
he said "reach out to me and i will convince you"
FUCKS WITH ME HEAD!!! i want to hear this, and i don't. i wish i could go through a car wash or go to an island and just erase everything in my head with a good cleanse. i just feel like i can't escape.
all i know for sure, is contact sets me back. no contact does too.. makes me sad.. but the contact makes me feel tortured.
wish i knew how to end the madness.
hugs to you
I know what you mean. How long had it been since you heard from him? I take it you don't believe he is sincere? The thought of him forgetting about me is painful so by him contacting me I get some relief knowing he hasn't forgotten me, especially on Vday, but I want to forget him because the heartache is just too much and obviously that's not going to happen with him contacting me.
What does it mean?
Humans carry scars, we can heal, but not to the same as before.
If you need something from him to heal, you won't get it, he wouldn't give it to you in the relationship.
To even consider that as remotely genuine I would have to see mountains moved to my doorstep and incredible acts of self sacrifice to even open one of my eyes to look
Refurb - to me closure just means two people acknowledging to one another that its over I guess.
I crave it as it feels good for that moment, but then I'm set way back and the pain is far worse. It is hard to cut it with child care and visitation to coordinate, but as everyone here can attest to - healing happens faster without it. Do your best to avoid it.
Valentine's day was very difficult emotionally. I had my son for the weekend, and focusing on him helped a lot. However I got a text from my ex saying I could have him next weekend too because she is leaving Friday to spend 10 days in the keys with her new guy.
Then, when I dropped my son off Sunday night, she gave me a valentine's day card that was conflicted. "I know I initiated this, but know it isn't because I don't love you. We are divorced. I'm not your wife. I'm not your lover. I don't know what I am anymore, but know that I love you."
How am I supposed to feel about that? I didn't want this and I still love her, but I have to get unstuck and move on. I like hearing she loves me, but her actions don't match the message and I'm incredibly torn up and sad.
My ex and I separated over 40 years ago. We had 3 kids and through the years, she treated me like a dog. I did everything I could to try and appease her and not get confrontational with her. I payed child support for 14 years and tried to have a civil relationship with her but, she would not allow that. Almost every time I picked up my kids for their weekend visits, she would start a fight. We tried to solve this by meeting on neutral ground, at my parent's home . The did not work either.
When she got cancer 3 years ago, I went to the hospital and stayed all night in the ICU waiting room with my daughter. I went in to see her. She had monitors, a ventilator, tubes and wires everywhere. I told her that I did not know what I had done to make her hate me all these years but, whatever it was, I apologized and I asked her to allow me to have prayer with her and my daughter and son. She wrote on a tablet "thank you". They finally got her cancer in remission and for the next 3 years, she did fairly well . I Oct. of 2011, she got a bad report, the cancer had returned and there was nothing else they could do for her. I sent word to her that I would like to talk to her "one on one". She refused. In mid-December of 2012, I was told that she was considering allowing me to talk to her. In Jan. of 2012, I received a call from my daughter that her mom was bad and was being taken to the hospital. I jumped in my car and drove to the hospital. I went in to her room and took her by the hand. Our son was holding her other hand. She opened her eyes and said "hi". I asked her how she felt and she said "bad". I told her that the prognosis did not sound good and she agreed. I then told her that I did not want her to die, with hard feelings between us. I then asked her this question, "Is there anything you want to ask me"? Her answer was "no". I then asked her " is there anything you want to tell me"? Again, her answer was "no". I then told her again that I did not want her to die with hatred towards me. She then said "everything is ok between us". She then closed her eyes and went into a morphine induced sleep. I wept but, I visited with my son and daughter for a few minutes, told them if they needed me to call me then, I left.
At 11pm, my daughter called me and said her mother had went into a coma at 10pm. She called me the next morning and said her mother died at 3:08 a.m. I wept again.
Closure? Not even death brings closure in many cases. I have visited her grave many times in the past 2 years. I still remember when a 19 year old country boy and a little 16 yr. old blue eyed blond got married and prepared to take on the world.
I understand where you are coming from. Through the abuse, the physical and verbal attacks, the affairs, and even after 40 years have passed, these memories of the good times remain, even if they were short lived. There is a certain level of pain, that will always be there that even death cannot removed or change.
I have tried to move on but rejection hurts and to not be able to say goodbye hurts even more but I'm not going to live my life waiting for that to happen, I have no choice but to let go, not think about him and live my life with out him.
