In my case, even though I have the kids 75% of the time and we agreed I have primary custody, I'm still paying her hundreds a month in child support, with spousal support on top of that.
Oh yeah, and I'm still paying her health insurance and doctor bills, car insurance, cell phone, etc, etc, etc.
Any way, short answer is, figure out what the law will require one of you to pay, and make sure it's followed. Begging for more after the fact is pretty crappy, though.
If it's something big, he probably deserves the right to discuss it with you: braces or other orthodontic work, etc.
You need to see a lawyer ASAP. It is NOT unusual for someone not to divorce their spouse until the children reach age 18... then he is NOT responsible for ANY child support. You'll get nothing for the 20 year old...
You need to make sure you have copies of everything and know where all the money is going. RUN as fast as you can to a good lawyer.
In NY you should get child support until the kids are 21, in some states it's 18, and in most it's until they graduate from high school or 18 (whichever's later).
In the meantime, I like this on-line calculator. It was pretty much right on for my state.

Unreimbursed medical expenses are not included in child support. They should be split accordingly.
Sometimes extracurricular activities are also not included in the child support and would also be split accordingly.
You are probably letting him off way too easy. Please seek legal advice. And keep ALL receipts, even if you think they don't matter.
