Hello all,
I am new here and freshly broken from my break up. My now ex and I have been together for a little over a year but feels like a life time, he’s 36 and I am 30. We met online and he had recently become unemployed from his position in finance that he had been extremely successful in for 8-10 years. He did something small but stupid one month before we met and ended up losing his job due to zero tolerance. In that field, if you do something wrong you get a mark on your license. So he knew he had to search elsewhere. He had a back up opportunity in CA for his friends business which he planned on pursuing until he met me. When we met in August, we met on bumble. He was very upfront about the potential to move there and we just met for a drink. Then we just clicked and spent almost every day thereafter together. He was torn and would say he never thought he’d meet the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with at the same time. He decided to stay here in NY for me and give the job search a try in NY because he wanted to pursue our relationship. We moved very very fast. We talk future, marriage etc. he brings it up more than me sometimes but it all just comes natural. We love each other very very deeply.
Since he now has a mark on his finance license, although many companies wanted to hire him, he kept getting rejected and rejected due to the compliance department not willing to take the “risk”. His ego and confidence dropped so low. Depression kicked in and there has been ALOT of anger which has been taken out on me. But lots of love too. he ended up getting a non related job in the financial business back in end of March. Two weeks in, they didnt realize that their personal compliance company wouldn’t be okay with the mark on his license, even though they knew it was totally unrelated and the supervisors didn’t care. So he got let go. He sunk even lower. I felt terrible. That started his next search for non related jobs in sales. He had a bunch of interviews but many people chose more experienced over him or he chose to refuse some because they were commission only or not a high enough salary or not something that makes him “passionate” about it. He also decided to pay a lawyer to get the mark removed from his license so in 6-12 months he may be able to work in the field again, a high chance and since then, the CA guy reached back out to him (it’s a friend from college) and now he is deciding to pursue this position. He spent the entire year not working at all, refusing to take a small job to get by while he searched, and now he is down to almost no money as he spent his entire savings to survive the last year. His family and friends understand where he is coming from, but also feel I am right for him.
it is bittersweet because although I love him unconditionally and I understand how important careers are, I wish we could somehow make the struggle work here. The job across the country is not definite yet, but he still feels he wants to end our relationship because he does not feel he can give me what I deserve (engagement, wedding, baby etc.) any time in the next few years. I am having a hard time letting him go, he continues to tell me how much he loves me and would do anything to make the circumstances different. I am so confused and defeated.

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

I'm horrified! I knew my insurance would go up due to getting a new car but I didn't expect it to go up over $2,000. I did have an accident with the snow/ice in the winter. I was just telling my brother that I have had my car since March 2, 2026 and have only spent $75 on an oil change. Now this! I called another insurance company and their quote was over $4,000. I guess I have to pay...
I feel like there is a lot about him you don’t know. When someone tells you “ You deserve better”, listen to that person. They are telling the truth.
I m so sorry he broke your heart.
Let him go to CA... don't fight him on that.... because who knows if that job will work out either.., and he might come back to NY anyway.... and if it does work out for him in CA, depending on if you two are still talking at that time... you could think about moving to CA, if you really know this is a serious relationship that would lead to the things you want - marriage, kids, etc... the things you mentioned in your post.
I know he said he wanted to end it, and that may be the case. You live your life in the meanwhile. If you two are meant to be, it will work itself all out later. But, don't wait around.
He needs to get himself together before he will be good for anyone else. Let him go to CA. and don't fight him on that, don't ask for a long distance relationship, etc.
In the end, I want him to be happy, of course. He has been asking me to do a long distance relationship but it would be coast to coast and unfortunately I am just not willing to do that. Which be completely understood. What’s frustrating is that up until yesterday he was saying the only way the relationship will end is if I choose to walk away and then he changed his mind. So it kind of feels like I have been slighted and I am definitely a little bitter that he did that. He also has the potential to get this issue expunged from his license via the lawyers he hired and go back to his old life. So it is frustrating that in a few months this could all go away. Pride is a powerful thing. Like I said, I do truly understand his point of view but I can’t help but feel so hurt.
But for real, there seems to be something amiss. I love you and I want to leave you. He is too proud to take any job. Insider trading does not get you banned from the world.
Let him leave and go get a job on the other side of the country.
Continue living as you want to.
Heal yourself and grow from this.
I agree with @girlincalif that the best thing to do now is to let him go. I know it's way easier said than done. If he's the right guy for you, he will do what he needs to do and then you never know what the future holds.
I do have one concern in the fact that he became very angry and took it out on you. That's also something to consider. When you're thinking about marriage, it's important to be with someone who is able to control their anger.
Perhaps with you guys being apart, it will cause him the pain of missing you which may motivate him to do some of the things he needs to do. For now, it may be best not to contact him, look him up on social media, etc. I have learned the hard way that those things just make it worse.
Find other things to focus on. Spend time with friends and family. Work on a hobby. Go to church. I've even found that responding to people on here in similar situations has been healing for me as well. It helps to know that you're not alone.
Praying for you!
I am really struggling with the beginnings of this, the pain of walking around with a big hole inside me and the dread of loneliness
Take some time to really love you. You deserve someone who will really love you and when things don't add up you have to believe what it looks like, or at least be very cautious.
You are in a permanent relationship with you so treat you good. Maybe this will open up a whole new door or pathway to your Destiny.
The guy who will risk his career by doing "something small but stupid" in order to skirt the rules and violate company policy will also violate relationship "policy".
"It was just a nude pic, I know it was stupid, I really didn't mean it....."
Sorry, I am NOT trying to get down on you... I am just looking at this from all sides. I do think you would be better off in the long run with someone who didn't CHOOSE to risk his career and lose his license (yes, he did make that choice, and that does reflect something about his character) and that caused him to have trouble finding a job now, and you just happened to meet him at this time in his life. Sometimes the timing sucks, and that happens with some couples.
I do hope that you move on, live your life, go on dates if you feel like doing that now, and try your best to get past this. The pain will fade in time. Keep busy, see friends, see family, go to events, volunteer... keep busy.
Find a new hobby try it out.
The success of your journey will give others hope.
You can go back and read your journal a year from now and see a different you.
Take this time to let the old you go, and embrace the new alive you as you go into the new phase of your life.
