Speaking from experience, I have been in true love 3 times. The end of each of those hurt just the same. But, I fell in love again eventually...
You need to take time to work on yourself. I am a little older than you and things are better than ever. There is hope, if you are willing to work for it. Counseling helps and there is no shame in wanting to get help.
I posted some concerns about dating again on another board and a guy told me that he had a blast when he was my age. We are never too old as long as we aren't bed ridden. Life is what we make of it. Once you believe that, the sky is the limit.

I found that I was more alone in my marriage than I have been as a divorced woman.
Currently I'm talking to a guy that I quite like, but finding someone, romantically, isn't on my agenda as things that will make my life good. It will enhance it, for sure, but I think it's been good so far.
And, you're only 40. Really, that is young...and maybe look at the positive that you dropped a relationship you, yourself, admitted wasn't a good one....staying in an uhappy relationship, to me, is far worse than being "alone".
