And I survived with the help from some really good friends. Went out to dinner and had a good time, kids included. I really couldn't have asked for a better time, considering for the last two years all he gave me were "I owe you's".

I'm glad you had a good time! I basically did the same thing and it was still good.
Yeah, last year I didn't even get sexy time (nothing) at all on my birthday. Waited and tried to initiate a couple times and nothing. Maybe that should have been a sign, as I look back. I now look back and see what actually happened instead of what I look forward to happening, and it's not so bad. I looked forward to waking up to birthday sex, but reality doesn't match my expectations. I seem to not remember all that when I was in the relationship. At least what I have now for my birthday is real and there are no expectations.
Having good friends that care about you is one of the best gifts in the world :)
