Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
Each and every thing we do during the course of a day can be used as therapy or as I say to myself...practice!
My goal...be as good as I once was....at "everything"!! I was told it wasn't possible...it'll never happen all kinds of negative feedback. I haven't listened to them. I made up my mind when I was first told to be like a cartoon character I'd seen in my younger years.
Picture this...a young girl feet planted in the dirt with the look of determination on her face...the little word bubble...says...I'll show you!!! (If you'r male...change her to him...it doesn't matter)
With ever struggle...I've planted my feet! Trust me...I've been knocked down a few times too. When that happens it forces me to find...another way to achieve the goal I set for myself....awe....that executive thinking problem I had...very good therapy!!
Multitasking...another problem I had. I added music while working on what ever project. Now...upping the volume. The old saying...if it's too loud you're too old? Nah...I'm TBI ;-)
Practice doing the things you're having trouble with. Start slow and add as you can tolerate it. Many things can be used as therapy to get the practice.
It's worked very well for me...almost ready to go back to the doctors...to show them in person...they were wrong; I can be who ever I want to be!
Good luck in reaching your goals!!
The concept of pushing yourself a little past where it hurts, and then giving yourself a break to relax and internalize your gains seems to be working though its a slow process and I only notice the improvements month to month.
Just trying to do basic tasks helps. I now am able to grocery shop fairly well, and I'm getting better at remembering everything I need.
My husband once said that in order to be good at something you have to do that thing over & over again. (He is a former college athlete who was very successful in his sport.)
So, in general, I would say that anything that I'm trying to get back, I need to keep working at. Currently, I'm working on my writing, because I've "lost" certain words. So, I'm re-learning them so that I can write well again. And, I have to re-check things after I write them.

Luminosity is great! If you cant afford it, you can do a few days for free.
I tried jigsaw puzzles, but with my headaches it didnt pan out. If you didnt have the headaches, and they didnt give you headaches I think they would be a great processing activity.
