Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.

So here I sit with my broken ankle watching one of the four TV channels we get. There was an interesting segment about the effects of electronics ( computer, "smart phones" , etc ) on the brain. I thought I'd share some of the notes I wrote down:
Pet scans were done on people reading a book- some red activity in certain places. Scans were also done on people "googling" or surfing the net. There was a lot more activity ( colored areas ) on the people at the computer. So there are benefits of surfing the web,, but also warnings.
The one stressed the most was that if we spent too much time on the computer , phone, or whatever, we're not giving the brain a chance to rest and "reboot" ."The brain needs time to rest, so don't get obsessed with all this stuff".
The neurologist also said it was important to have people you actually talk with face to face. He was speaking from a more social perspective, and thought the more we facebook, email, etc. the more we isolate ourselves from real communication.
( I remember my husband and I not giving our daughters anything with earphones until the oldest daughter was about 13. We didn't want them "lost in their own world " and not talking to us ) .
The "take-aways"" I got from the segment were :
Feel free to be on the computer, but put some limits on it .
Be quiet and let your brain rest occasionally
Don't forget to talk to others
It was an interesting segment, and makes me feel less guilty about the time I'm spending here , esp while I'm captive to the couch. - H.

Hi Holly! I never thought of what you had written. That is something to think about. You are right, now a days a teenager does not have to ''talk'' to anyone face to face. They have the computer, and the internet, which I never had as a teenager. That makes sense too, when you were saying about resting our brains. Especially those of us who do have brain disorders. I find I get so tired sometimes, and did not realize this probably comes from my TBI. I try to keep busy, and the doctor said the more I do, the more tired I am going to get, but, that's o.k., it's normal. And, I have a pretty happy life.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
