Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
I think she is in complete denial about my brain, the neurosurgeon talks about how serious my condition was and still is right in front of her, but yet she just seems like its no big deal and I should be back to my old self already. I shouldn't say just her, its her and a lot of other people.
But yeah, I know what you mean. Ive had people act like I'm dragging this out, milking it for all its worth, but that's further from the truth. I would love to have pain-free, happy go lucky days again. Hopefully someday?
I've learned my balance is going to be off. I walk heavier than I used to and I stand different than I used to....all due to my shattered pelvis and broken leg. Yes, the surgeons put me back together, but...they changed what I had before. My joints are very narrow...no room for the screws they placed for my joints to work like they did before...they did the best they could...just gives me fits once in a while. I cannot run...the rod in my leg won't take the impact...nor can I skip. Could be the knee, ankle or hips that give out...no warning. I count myself lucky...I am walking at all!!!
I've had 1 person tell me I'm using it to my advantage...I tell her...I'll trade places with you anytime you think you can do better, no...wait...I can't do that to anyone, not even you!
A reminder of the length of time it can take...and that you are trying usually do the trick. Don't let anyone tell you that you're not trying...if you are. They have no idea...neither did we before this happened to us!
It really pisses me off at times that people are so unsympathetic. While I certainly would have had NO idea at all what a brain injury is like, I can't imagine ever saying some of the things people say to me.
People just dont get it. I am sorry :(
I guess it is as my son said,"it comes with the territory and you just get on with the show." Even so I wonder. Do you really get used to it or is it just acceptance?
