Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
Does anyone have the problem of their friends or relatives thinking they understand all about you , and make assumptions that aren't correct?
I've decided the only reason I'm not going to kill my husband is that I wouldn't look good in orange, the color of prison jumpsuits. We have a daughter that lives in Hawaii. We are making plans to visit her next winter. However the more I thought about going ( and talking to my soc. wker about it), the more I realize the problems.
1. The five hour time change and how that will affect my meds.- to change them for 10 days, then back again. That will lend itself to me having a seizure.
2. Travel itself. I get anxious about getting to the right gate in time, etc.
3, My memory. I have to ask myself, what am I Really going to remember about the trip? I'll remember things like my son in law doing crazy things, but will forget the typical "tourist " stuff.
There are other things too. I talked to my husband this morning about the trip and concerns Instead of saying " I'm sorry ; I'll be lost without you ", he said "I assumed you wouldn't go. I'm glad you're Finally realizing your limitations".
I"ve known my limitations for eons. I just got around to figuring out what limits would play into the Hawaii trip. Mark seems to think he knows all my "issues" when in reality he has no clue - until I point one out.
My mother will say "I went out to eat with Greta- oh never mind, you don't remember who she is" - when I Do remember her.
This is frustrating- moreso than people not knowing my limits.
Can anyone relate to this ?

Can you slowly adjust med times before you go to Hawaii so it wont be so dramatic, watch time difference, and adjust slowly bit by bit when you return? take lots of pics and write on back about them and date etc? My memory affected too so understand.
Frustrating? For me, that is an extreme understatement.
Luckily my boyfriend, who I was living with before this happened, is a lot more understanding and constantly enthuses about my recovery and how he's amazed I'm back to normal after what doctors/parents told him to expect.
It's extremely frustrating with their lack of understanding--I totally get what you're feeling--more frustrating than the actual recovery process and I can't imagine handling it if I didn't have my boyfriend on the other spectrum.
