Brain Injury Support Group

Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.

Hey DS friends, so before my TBI i was pretty into music. i loved many gernes and stuff but after my TBI this seemed to amplify. Having a good song to listen to to tak your mind off the pain has really helped me. I just saw Meep76's status of chasing cars by snow patrol. I had a wierd moment because i was listening to this song a few days ago and it for some reason this time stuck out to me. We had a discusion earlier about relationships with our TBI baggage and i found a connection with that and this song for some reason. Maybe my interpretation is a little skewed but it works for me haha.
So heres my discussion topic, does music therapy work for you?, if so what type of music makes you feel better or have you found any music that really uplifts you on those bad days? and Has your interpretation of certain songs changed post TBI?

I couldn't live without music, but glad you liked it! I can so relate to lyrics. Growing up I've always have looked to music to get me through life's challenges. It's what drives me to succeed or helps me get the tears out when I need a good cry..but its all inspirational. I find it still helps today :)

Ive always loved music and would have been lost without my mp3 player in the hospital all that time. I seem to enjoy it now more than ever, I find it relaxing and calms me down better than anything else. I listen to the song 'Everything' by Lifehouse over and over, very soothing to my brain.

I've always been a hobby musician, but since my career was caputz I began going pro and playing as much music as I can about 2 years ago. I have definitely found music to be a powerful recovery force.

You are right music is therapy! :)

For me music has always been a huge part of my life. But, since my accident I connect even more. I listen to the music, but also the lyrics. Some are so touching, and others just really hit home. I think the types of music will vary from one individual to the next. It's all about who you really are, and what makes you tick. My interpretation will be different from the next person. But, TBI did change how I perceive, and interpret each song I hear. I think it's a good thing! The way I interpret music now has drawn me back into the reality of what this life's all about.

thanks everybody haha i love ur feedback. moxymom this was so funny to me because i have alot of lifehouse on my mp3 and never heard that song and omg i fell in love! with the lyrics and the tone it was amazing i know what you see in it. truthsyrup20 dido to all the bands you mentioned ha i have always loved diff types of music and after tbi i got into the cork slipknot kmk vibes and it helps get out the anger and heavy emotions so i get that haha. hmeyers512 awesome! i loved that music was really great. thanks anymore feedback id love. im always looking for new music

I used to love music. All kinds. Loud, hard, soft, rock, jazz . . . . showtunes . . . But that is all gone now. After my injury, my brain cannot process music the same. It is now undiscernable noise. especially if I have never heard it before. I am working on it in therapy. But, I can only go for about 3 minutes before i get sick. Nauseaus, dizzy . . . I miss it very much. A huge part of life you dont realize how big til its gone . . . Happy for and envious of all you who can embrace it and actually use it as therapy. I need therapy to try and listen to it! kinda of sadly ironic.

Isn't amazing how you can totally forget tons of things, but for some reason you never forget words to songs or the memories attached to any one particular song. I noticed this a few weeks ago when we had the radio playing for Chad and he was signing along to all the songs. We've been playing him music from the start and now that he is starting to get some of his speech back, I think it helps even more because I can understand most of what he is saying when he sings along to the radio.
