Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
As time passed and I got better ( 7 or 8 years) , I started forming memories again. Not as many as I once did, but I can now remember Rachel starring in her school play, as well as both their graduations. ( The bigger the event, the more I remember) . One thing I have learned- I can only remember so much, so I choose what I want to retain. I know I'll never forget Amy asking me to be in the birthing room when she has her baby in June, and how she said 'I don't care how many baby blankets I get, I want one from you ". I think "emotional" memories are stored better than others.
I know how frustrating and what a loss you're feeling. It's only been 2 years for you, so things may come back. Ask for reminders ; they may jog your memory. I keep a journal for when "little " things pop into my mind ( like when Rachel played balance beam on her crib rail and fell !) . I want the girls to be able to look at the journal one day and see I am not quite the 'forgetful mum" they have labeled me as.
Big hugs to you ! I know this isn't easy, but I hope over time things will return , as they did me. Don't be afraid to ask for reminders, and try not to beat yourself up if the memory doesn't come today. Write down the things you Do remember , and perhaps you will be able to bring more things forward. It's been 27 years since that car accident and I'm still remembering things that I thought were long forgotten. ( Much to my girls' dismay at times !) -Holly
