Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
DBG - I am on meds, but they have changed a few times, and my lack of hunger has been a constant right from the time of accident.
I would not eat if someone didn't remind me. I have felt actual hunger pains...3 times in 2 years. Usually when I haven't eaten for a whole day. The body's way of saying...hey did you forget me??
My husband was and still is very good about asking what I had for breakfast and lunch then he woould make sure I had dinner of some sort because...honestly it is hard to eat if you are not hungry!
When I returned to work, he knew the fellow that cooks in our cafeteria and he had him watch me. Basically he was helping me set a schedule...and I follow it to this day unless something in my daily schedule changes.
I don't eat a lot...and ya, I'm gaining weight because of it. What I do it the body stores. We are working on a new schedule that I eat healthy snacks periodically throughout the day to stop that problem. Trouble is...I don't think about it until someone else makes a comment about them being hungry. LOL!!
I also think losing your appetite is a symptom of depression and speaking for myself it is a daily battle to not sink into sadness.
I can't remember how long it was that I lost my appetite...sorry about that but I have memory loss for a period of time after the accident.
I don't think I even realized I wasn't eating until my husband would ask me if I ate, and I looked at him blankly. Sounds like you need to do what Sporty & NSM do & make a schedule.
I find I still don't have a huge appetite but I can't tell if it's just because I'm not working out. Normally (aka pre-injury) I worked out every day so I always was hungry after working out.
