well . . . i think you are in an amazingly unique position . . . for me, i had to loose my career and now i am restarting at the bottom . . . but you get to go to school and learn something. The world is at your feet. I guess I think if i was in your place, I would ask myself, what do I want to do? Secondary schooling is the place to explore and learn if those things are right for you. Jump in. Try them. The sky is the limit.

Good reply oneid. Can you write down your things you have any problems with, and then look at what your still good at and think about choices from that? You may find a lot more than you thought.

Every BI is unique to each person who has it. What part(s) of the brain. You should do and try anything you want. You will find out your limits. A neuro-psychologist can do testing to determine what areas you are having trouble with and recommend ways you may be able to improve. My daughter was almost finished with her 3rd yr in college, taking difficult courses for her Marketing degree, keeping close to a 4.0 and she had a job. In 2010 she suffered deep brain injuries. One in part of the brain that controls cognitive thinking, the other contusion caused paralysis on her left side. She regained most of the use of her left side. One year and 3 months later and still recovering, she took one class and successfully completed it in the Spring semester. She could not take more than one class because she has problems with cognitive thinking. She is going through cognitive training which they say can truly help. She also got a part time job answering phones at a Dr. office, but the course of her life changed tremendously. Colleges have offices for disability that allow a student to get special assistance (longer test times, etc). Good luck to you!

I agree with the positive comments, its such a good idea to explore all the possibilities in secondary education!
I'm a TBI survivor, and I'm currently going to college to get a BS in Math. Let me tell you --things generally take me twice as long as everyone else, and it is very frustrating sometimes. There IS AN UPSIDE though. Since I have to study hard to figure stuff out, I often remember it better later when we are adding new info onto it. My classmates who figured it out instantly when we first learned did it in class dont always remember.
I'd encourage you to try college. Be prepared to do less than you want to, and work really hard But, I guarantee you will find all kinds of new interests and passions for the subjects you love, because they get much more amazing in college than they were high school. And something in a booklet at the office for students with disabilities said remember that sometimes a disability is an ability, because it makes you look at things differently than people who dont have disabilities. Something a teacher mentioned in class once...one of the greatest mathematicians of all time who invented a lot of stuff we used in calculus II was blind.
So, lets not let brain injuries stop us. Leonhard Euler didn't let blindness stop him from inventing stuff that most of us likely wouldn't come up with even with our eyesight!

You will never know what you can do if you let someone tell you...you can't. Prove them wrong...prove it to yourself!!

I'm doing the same oneid.., although i have a 2nd career as a musician which really provided power for my recovery until i got to the point where i could attempt to get back in my old career in computer programming. ( almost 5 years) ... That career will always be 2nd to music now, because music helped me survive the years of pain and tbi. I'm >3 months into a entry level position (= low pay), and the first few weeks, the concentration it took was soooo painful, i can't descibe it, but like working out at the gym, as i continued to face issues thru pain, the pain diminished and now I can do almost anything there. I feel pain when i am pressured to do more than is possible, but so long as the work load is doable, no pain now at all.

I mean i really would get harsh physical pain just from concentrating and pushing beyond what i could handle, but i felt myself getting stronger on almost a daily basis. Now I need to push for a raise. :)

Well done Hymers! You explained exactly what I went through upon my return to work. Well worth the efforts as well as the pain!

I'm 5 and 1/2 years recovered from my TBI. Being a college grad, I think I have most of my intelligence back. I can read, type, speak loud enough, and my memory is mostly better. I thought I wouldn't get this back after TBI-it just happens over time. I'm still not working though. I would just make sure your brain is ready for secondary school by doing reading on computer and then answering questions. Test yourself first.

I have been working for 24 years as a design engineer my TBI was in 1987! Just keep telling yourself that there is nothing you can't do. I'm not going to pretend that's it's easy in fact it's tough at times but with determination you can achieve anything you want.
