Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
I am also a strong type A "in my normal life" which is what I've been saying. After twelve months I am starting to think THIS is my new normal life. :-(
I went back to school in the Fall and just signed up for 1 class. But - at the same time - the Dr's started me on a bunch of therapies - and it has all overwhelmed me.
Everything ended up getting worse - my pain, my emotions and my cognitive problems. But I've learned some things along these last few painful months.
I had another head injury 1 1/2 years after the first and now I am having symptoms of brain swelling..4 months after the 2nd injury!?!?
No one understands your brain hurting. Now just trying to catch up on emails is hurting my brain. Everything seems fuzzy. My husband is the King of Denial & wants to think I can just take 2 tylenol and wake
up fine in the morning!
My brain wasn't the same after the 1st tbi & worse after the 2nd & even worse now!!!
How did you get those around you to understand? Even sending the emails about brain injury didn't help. I think most people think I look fine, therefor I am fine.
It's overload. That's exactly what it is. The reason for this is due to the fact that a brain injury no longer holds the energy reserve it used to. All the energy you have is now focused upon getting through the day. Our brains is the organ that uses up most of our energy, contrary to popular beleif. Since those reserves are no longer there, it doesn't have much energy to balance things out.
And yes, it is important to step back and rest. One of the things my wife's doctor did was write her a note that requires her mandatory breaks every 2 hrs so she can prevent herselve from overloading while working. Might be something to look into if you are still working with a doctor.
I hear ya, loud and clear. I used to handle stress...like someone smiliing at me smile back...no big deal. Not anymore. I run when I can...as soon as I can to get away from it because I know what will happen.
