Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
My husband does not have a TBI, however, he has symptoms similar to TBI due to encephalopathy which was caused by Influenza A.
December 12th he was admitted to the hospital with Influenza A. By late evening on the 13th he was already having memory issues. He was released to a rehabilitation center on the 18th because he could not walk by himself (he had walked himself into the hospital on the 12th though). Released from rehab on the 22nd (never had a PT or OT session other than the initial evaluations, he walked on his own. Waste of time at that place).
He is home now but has expressive aphasia, parkinsonism (tremors), extreme fatique, weakness, discoordination, memory issues, endurance issues, balance issues and every injury he has ever had feels like it is brand new. Oh and he has hypersexuality.
He is 46 years old and works a very physical job. Now he can walk about 200 feet before needing to rest. He is being seen by neurology, infectious disease specialist, physical medicine and his primary care physician. He starts therapy on 1/29. 2 x a week for 3 hours (1 hr of speech, 1 hr of occupational and 1 hr of physical)
I am trying to hold on to everything. Our household is full. Our oldest son is still living at home while he goes to school full time and works full time (and he is bipolar). Our 18 year old daughter is selfish but trying to help a little. 15 year old son suffers from ADHD, Dysgraphia and Aspergers. My mother also lives with us and has the beginnings of dementia. I am the only adult working. I am the only adult who can drive. I am the only person who seems to be able to cook/clean/do laundry. I am really getting tapped out. Oh and, thanks to our primary care doc, I am medicated. That's probably saving the lives of everyone at my house right now. (Just kidding).
How do you cope with this? I am never mad at him, but I am mad at the situation and I am finding myself mad at God and questioning my faith.

i became psychotic from it and alot of symptoms. i couldnt talk anymore or know words, trouble walking, lose balance, seizures and stroke symptoms, catatonic, it wAS really bad
if you look up anti nmda receptor encephalitis that is what ive been dealing with
then i got a traumatic brain injury while dealing with that due to violence to me by some men who did not like the fact that i was mentally disabled from encephalitis/encephalopathy
if you get mentally disabled your prone to be picked on and a victim of violence
yes it is really difficult and ive been through too much
