Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
When I finally saw him I was expecting the worst, his leg is broken in 2 places, broken nose, 8 ribs, shoulder, collar bone and a collapsed lung PLUS major Road Rash.
He held onto the Motorcycle for 180 feet out of 300, so I know he is a fighter, he never lost consciousness, and has absolutely no bruising or road rash on his head. the doctors are now telling me his MRI shows Diffuse Anoxal Injury from the fishtailing of the Bike, my question is, because I do not understand alot of the reading I have been doing on it, does anyone ever recover from this??? He seems to know who we are and seems to understand what we say to him, and he does move his fingers when asked too, shakes his head when asked questions..... he can not talk yet because he has a trac to help him breathe easier.... This is alot for me to process right now.... can anyone help me with this diagnosis???

Basically, any closed head injury probably has DAI. My husband had a DAI that did not affect the brain stem. It was "moderate" which is still a severe head injury. But two years out he walks, talks, stays at home by himself, has a functioning memory. He needs help and can't work or drive, but he is still a functioning person and tells me he is generally happy. He continues to improve.
The thing to remember about DAI is the progress is slower than with other injuries but continues for longer. One doctor told me at the rehab center that cognitive improvement happens for the rest of their lives.
