Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.

Drinking zafter TBI

I am a TBI survivor, and now I find myself drinking a LOT more. Once I have ONE drink, I cannot stop. Any help, or ideas? Anyone else have this problem? I used to not drink that much before my tbi. PLEASE tell me I am not the only one :(

My son is 19 and got his TBI 3 1/2 years ago. Unfortunately he still has no insight to his injuries and probably never will.

Once he starts drinking, he can not stop. He can go days without drinking, but put a drink in his hand, and he'll drink until either the drink has run out or he passes out.

My husband and I are at a complete loss as to how to help him. He is 19, we are not guardians, and all we can do is kick him out of the home.

Any suggestions? I feel like *I* am on the road to a nervous breakdown at this point. . .
