Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
Why are there no topics/support groups/articles/studies being done on the correlation between brain injury and corrections/jail/prison?
there are massive stats in CDC and USA that up to 87% of all prisoners have sustained a brain injury - and yet finding any support for myself, and my partner, who suffered MULTIPLE brain injuries, and then after 3 concussions in rapid sucession accidently broke the law, was charged, and has faced his punishment with dignity and grace. Even though had the law been current, and medical diagnostics able to prove it - he would have been 100% acquitted.
We want to help, and we want to know that we're not alone,but i can't find anyone to tell similar stories - where are the caregivers, and survivors, that can without doubt attribute their troubles with the law, or incarceration, or charges, with their inabilities or weaknesses, or subconcscious activities related to their brain injury.
Specifically frontal lobe damage, and any inconsistencies in behaviour that landed you in trouble due to innappropriate behaviours.
My friend had a massive brain annyeurism, and was telling nurses he wanted to do things to them, that were innappropriate, i've read books about brain injury patients with innapropriate mannerisms in the hospital beds, and they're told its OK and normal with frontal lobe injuries,
But where are the families that have suffered because it didn't happen in the hospital, but out on the street, and they were charged, and made to do pennance, We're one of them, but i'm still trying to find why and how to help others with these similar issues.

Not to just comlain about my son being in jail, but this has even opened my own eyes, seeing what he goes through and some of the inmates there. I fought to keep him out, and they just did not care!! My only hope is he can hang in there, hes been there 2 mnths now, and 2 to go.
Its funny because you sound like I did when I first started research on tbi's. The stuff I found out is crazy. Is it because they look "normal" usually?? I dont get it.. I would love to to open the eyes of some of these officials.
Not sure what the answer is and how to educate people but there must be something that can be done. You would think that with all the military people coming back with TBI's from IED's , bombs and stuff that there would be a lot of articles being written or televised.
Just frustrating !
There really is no seperate facility to house inmates that have problems such as TBI is there?
Agree the not wearing a band aid and looking normal make people think you are fine, whether its the law or family and friends.
I feel like we are lost in shuffle of misunderstanding.
I hate to say, he almost got punched by a guy in jail, he doesnt want to fight, he can not take a blow to the head. This has been my greatest fear. A bully wanted to take his stuff and got mad when he said no. I pray everyday for these guys in jail that should not be there. I am just afraid it will take something really terrible for anyone to take notice.
If someone would write a draft with good conclusive medical evidence that each of us could add our experiences in a paragraph that would be cool. I would send that letter everywhere.
